Ireland’s recycling rate has not improved in over a decade. The latest EPA waste stats from 2022 show we’re producing too much waste and that we'll likely miss recycling targets. Key takeaways: 🗑️We generated 15.7 million tonnes of waste in 2022—8kg per person daily! Over half came from construction waste. ♻️Our recycling rate has plateaued, putting us at risk of missing EU municipal and packaging recycling targets for 2025. 🚢Over 1 million tonnes of municipal waste was exported due to gaps in recycling infrastructure. We urgently need to invest in new capacity to move from a linear to a circular economy. How can EPA licenced activities further reduce their environmental emissions and improve their performance? Major industrial and waste operations in Ireland are required to have a licence from the EPA. This includes operations in the food & drink, pharmaceutical, waste sector and more. The EPA inspects licensed operators regularly to ensure they are complying with the requirements of the licences. ‘Beyond Compliance’ is a recent initiative by the EPA which looks to acknowledge licenced operators whose environmental efforts and achievements go BEYOND their EPA licence requirements to be a driving force for positive change. Getting the recognition is a great way to show your customers and stakeholders that you're committed to environmental performance. Our previous candidates were recognised as going Beyond Compliance thanks to their energy, waste, and noise reduction projects, as well as biodiversity initiatives. To obtain this recognition, Irish industrial and waste activities shall report on projects in the following areas: 🌫️Reductions in Greenhouse Gas Emissions and air pollutants ☣️Eliminating/substitution of materials (particularly hazardous materials) 🗑️Diverting waste to a more circular system ☀️Investing in renewable energy infrastructure on-site (such as solar panels) 💧Developing extensive water conservation techniques 🚰Developing techniques which improve water quality 🐝Implementing projects to monitor and enhance biodiversity 🧑🤝🧑Engaging effectively with local communities/stakeholders for positive environmental outcomes 📄Anticipated regulatory or policy changes (i.e. preparing for changes in legislation or Best Available Techniques) Let us know what you are doing to go Beyond Compliance by submitting a case study of your project(s) in the Annual Environmental Report (AER) Beyond Compliance comment section. No - she's not playing with a remote-controlled boat; Laura is using a remote-controlled 'Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler' (ADCP). Our hydrometric officers like Laura use ADCPs to measure river flows - they're especially useful for measuring larger rivers. They work by using sound waves to calculate the speed and direction of flow at different depths across the river channel. This information collected in the field informs the EPA's monthly hydrology bulletin – swipe to learn more. So, what did we learn this month? Notwithstanding the flood events during storm Bert in late November, average river flows, lake levels and groundwater levels were generally below the long-term normal range. While monthly average river flows increased when compared to October, 70% of river flows remained below the normal long-term range. Why is hydrometric information important? It is a critical component of water management practices and informs decision making in multiple areas – including flood risk protection. We generated over 15.7 million tonnes of waste in 2022. That's equivalent to 8kg of waste generated per person every day. The EPA has today published the Circular Economy and Waste Statistics Highlights Report 2022. Here’s a breakdown of the key stats from the report: 🗑️Ireland’s annual waste generation has grown by over 20% in the last decade. ❌Ireland is now almost certain to miss EU municipal and packaging recycling targets for 2025. ♻️Ireland’s municipal recycling rate remains stagnant at 41% with no significant change in 10 years. 👷♀️Many construction activities are highly waste intensive, accounting for half of all waste generated. ❌Ireland has a waste infrastructure gap with over 1.2 million tonnes of municipal waste exported to other countries in 2022. It is time to change away from a wasteful linear economy. Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/enk34kyw #EPAReport #CircularEconomy #LetsGetCircular #Recycling #Waste
