The November jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics caused quite a stir, with headlines claiming a loss of 28,000 retail jobs. But a closer look reveals a more nuanced picture: the retail sector actually added 280,500 workers, though this figure fell short of expected seasonal hiring patterns. According to Pamela Danziger, Forbes, this discrepancy stems from the BLS’s seasonal adjustment methodology, which often hides more than it reveals during periods of heightened hiring like the holidays. Retailers like Target, Macy's, and others announced significant seasonal hiring plans, yet challenges remain. Labor shortages, shifting consumer behaviors, and competition with e-commerce logistics roles are reshaping the holiday workforce. As holiday sales growth is projected to remain modest, fewer employees might seem advantageous in the short term. However, this strategy could leave retailers vulnerable in 2025, especially with in-store experiences playing a critical role in rebuilding foot traffic. https://lnkd.in/gYUMdpUQ

Retailers are picking up the hiring slack with the holidays coming up. Kroger’s is planning to hire 25,000 workers across retail, ecommerce, and health care. Other retailers including Target, Macy's and Bath & Body Works have upped their hiring as well. While seasonal hiring is the immediate goal, retailers appear ready to expand beyond the holidays. When you look at rosy job reports, the details matter. The retail industry is one that has continued to hire. Kroger's hiring goal is consistent with what competitors in the space are planning. Target has plans to hire 100,000 seasonal workers, while Macy’s has goals of bringing on 31,000 holiday employees for its distribution centers. Aldi and Bath & Body Works announced their own seasonal hiring goals which range from 13,000 to 30,000. Competition especially from Walmart and Amazon has upped the game. What's interesting are the jobs aren't necessarily for the retail store floor. In Kroger's case, the company is hiring for everything from ecommerce roles to health care. Target and Macy's are hiring for its distribution centers. More importantly, the shortage of available workers has retailers boosting wages and benefits, which even includes educational support. Pundits are iffy on holiday season shopping, but retailers don't seem to be. Depending on who you ask, consumers are either pulling back or they'll be spending on deals. Whatever the case, retailers are betting that shoppers will be ready to spend, which explains the ambitious hiring goals. That's something to be cheery about in these interesting times we live in https://lnkd.in/ga_n4czg #krogers #retail #hiring #jobs #holidays #workforce #workers #career

Soft holiday #retail hiring amid reportedly strong holiday #consumerspending isn't so puzzling when you consider the massive technological and business process shifts underway behind the store shelves, as Marketplace reported last Friday. It's a no-brainer that e-commerce is more convenient for consumers, but it may also be #productivity enhancing for the broader economy. Why? Retail's "back of the house" (e.g., warehousing, logistics) is much more susceptible to automation or to outsourcing than the "front of the house" (e.g., store associates). Retail is hiring again. Slow and steady. While the latest April jobs report from the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) suggests a slowing but still strong labor market, it could be that the retail sector is one of the outliers. Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 175,000 in April, with the unemployment at 3.9 percent. Employment in the retail trade continued to trend up in April, adding 20,000 to its ranks. The DOl said that over the prior 12 months, the retail sector added an average of 7,000 jobs per month. In April, general merchandise retailers added 10,000 jobs.
