Hurricane Helene Hometown Hero

Amidst Hurricane Helene sweeping through the Southeast,

Aaron Gaines from North Augusta, South Carolina, has become a hometown hero, stepping up to help his community by collecting and distributing resources for those in need. From filling gas tanks for stranded cars to delivering basic necessities like ice, water, food, and charcoal, Aaron has been a lifeline for many in these trying times.

What makes Aaron’s efforts even more extraordinary is the level of personal sacrifice he has made. Over the course of the first few days, Aaron went without food and has barely slept, managing only 5-6 hours of rest over four days.

Despite his own financial uncertainty, he has spent a large portion of his own money, on the first day alone. His generosity extends to paying bills for others, securing hotel rooms, and even loaning his car so people could charge their phones.

Aaron’s commitment doesn’t end there. He has worked relentlessly to clear streets of fallen trees and move broken-down cars. All this while caring for his 67-year-old father, who is recovering from heart surgery and unable to care for himself.

At 33 years old, with a 15-year-old son, Aaron has always been a charitable force in his hometown, though his work rarely drew attention. However, with this storm, he knew the situation was too dire for modesty.

Even as he worries about how he will cover his own bills, Aaron remains steadfast in his mission to help others, saying, “We’ll cross that path when we get there.”

Despite the news reporting that it could be over two weeks before power is restored and water access might be lost, Aaron continues his efforts. On day five, after receiving a text at 3 a.m. about available gas, he immediately got up and helped fill at least 15 people’s tanks halfway.

Aaron’s story is a testament to the power of community, compassion, and resilience in the face of hardship. His actions are not driven by a desire for recognition but by a deep love for his community.
