Some may argue - what’s special, it was a miss for over a decade. I agree - not having a basic calculator app on the iPad was definitely a big miss. Users ended up downloading third party apps which didn’t have the same experience as a standard Apple app. But true to Apple’s philosophy, when they launch something, they bring it in with a lot of thought having gone behind the same. As they announced the launch of the calculator app at WWDC, the team has gone beyond merely releasing an app. They have now integrated the calculator functionality into the on-device calculations meaning that you can open a note, write a mathematical expression and the calculator app will solve it for you in real time in the background without even having to open the app. Now that’s the real ingenuity of Apple. When we started building BetterYou, we weren't sure if what we wanted to do was even possible. Screentime for iPhone had just come out a month before and the landscape for measuring how we spend time on devices was new and largely undocumented. We built on Android first since it was more open source, and less of a black box. When you are experimenting you don't want to just see that there's smoke coming from your car, you want to be able to pop the hood and see what's going on. Google has kept the OS open-source and very transparent since day one, which is important for any of us trying to build a better mobile future. That's why I’m saddened to hear that the U.S. Department of Justice wants to break apart Google and Android.
