Learn about Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) with our handy hub 🌱 BNG is an approach that aims to leave the natural environment in a better state than it was before. Under the Environment Act 2021, it is a mandatory requirement for developers (in England) to demonstrate that their project delivers 10% net gain in biodiversity. Written by our experts, our BNG hub is full of information, insights, and guidance, helping you understand what is required from your development. 🐝Biodiversity Net Gain Requirements Now Mandatory As of 12 February, it is now mandatory for proposed developments to deliver a biodiversity net gain (BNG) of 10%. In reality, most local authorities already have policies in place requiring biodiversity net gain of higher percentages than this. Developers therefore need to address BNG as part of their planning application, and will be refused planning permission if they don’t. BNG needs to be built into the pre-acquisition due diligence process, so developers undertand the requirements of them, as well as the ways in which they can deliver against their BNG requirement. Our planning team can help. Get in touch for more information, and let Vail Williams support you in creating, enhancing and maintaining ecologically beneficial habitats, whilst ensuring return on your investment. How did England get to mandatory Biodiversity Net Gain? Here is how our story unfolded, with the BNG baton being passed between national government, local government, industry and many other stakeholders who played a critical role in BNG becoming mandatory. Excellent work by Alice Stuart for collating our BNG story, and we'd love for your inputs - please let us know if there is anything to add: https://lnkd.in/eVyXA8Wv #BNG

A recent study conducted by researchers from the University of East Anglia explores public opinion on #BiodiversityNetGain, based on a representative sample of 500 adults from England. The study sheds interesting insights into public perception of #BNG: 👉 𝟮𝟭% of respondents said they had experience with BNG (with 𝟰𝟴.𝟲% of those having encountered it through local projects, 𝟮𝟲.𝟳% through non-local projects, and 𝟮𝟱.𝟳% through work-related experiences). 👉 𝟱𝟴.𝟮% of respondents believed it was possible to create a net gain in biodiversity after a development loss, with 𝟯𝟬.𝟴% unsure and 𝟵.𝟴% disagreeing. 👉 𝟲𝟯.𝟴% of respondents had a positive opinion of BNG overall, while only 𝟲.𝟰% held a negative view. 👉 𝟴𝟰% of respondents agreed that developers should be responsible for the creation and management of compensatory habitats. 👉 𝟲𝟴.𝟱% of respondents felt the BNG metric was an effective tool for measuring biodiversity, though 𝟭𝟳.𝟯% disagreed. The study notes limitations such as a potential overestimation of BNG knowledge, however the findings underscore the importance of transparency and effective communication in the successful implementation of BNG policies. 🔗 Full report: https://lnkd.in/eTd3iYab
