Meanwhile, at the G20 Brasil 2024, world leaders stressed scaling up climate finance—but failed to address the critical role of fossil fuel companies in the negotiations. A stark reminder: the fossil fuel industry drives over 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions. While Big Oil reaps record profits, those least responsible for the climate crisis suffer its worst impacts. Yesterday, Brazilian President Lula delivered a powerful speech, urging action. “We cannot postpone to Belém the task of Baku,” he declared, stressing that COP30 must be a turning point for ambitious climate plans and finance. The silence around the role of the oil and gas industry remains one of the greatest barriers to progress. At COP29, it’s time to heed the science—and #MakePollutersPay.

With the theme “One Earth, One Family, One Future,” India focused on promoting inclusive and sustainable growth. Main: • Support for Developing Countries: India advocated for changes in global financial systems and pushed for climate funding, especially for developing nations. • Digital Growth: India promoted the use of digital technology to reduce inequalities and support economic progress. • Health and Climate Action: India addressed health challenges after COVID and highlighted the importance of fighting climate change. • Global Collaboration: India worked to bring countries together on important global issues, such as food security and the Ukraine conflict. In summary, India’s role in the G20 Summit not only showcased its leadership but also set a path for future collaboration among nations.

India is poised to achieve a remarkable milestone in 2024, with an estimated 7% GDP growth rate, the fastest among #G20 nations. This projection underscores India's resilient economy and its ability to navigate global challenges while sustaining robust growth. Following India, Indonesia and China are expected to grow at 5% and 4.8%, respectively. Meanwhile, developed nations like Germany are projected to see minimal growth, highlighting the disparity in economic momentum within the G20. The Contribution of the Indian Presidency to the G20 Process was a significant moment in our Nation’s history, which I had documented as an Occassional Paper for the Indian Council of World Affairs, Ministry of External Affairs in December 2023. The G20 Indian Presidency was a people’s movement - it was inclusive, action oriented and decisive. India’s global dreams were etched on the domestic landscape. The G20 Indian Presidency conveyed the strong message for peace under the theme “One Earth, One Family, One Future”. India worked in collaboration with multilateral agencies and G20 Member Nations for collective action on global challenges. India’s G20 moment is etched in memory as historic, the high point of multilateralism, in our Nation’s history. The G20 Summit was reimagined as a forum for changing the wider world. India’s attempt to take the G20 outside the ordinary, single venue template, to hold 200 meetings in over 60 cities, drawing more than 100,000 official visitors from 125 countries, has been noted as a unique initiative. India’s G20 left an indelible mark as a global acknowledgement of India’s role in bridging the North-South divide. G20 was celebrated as a festival all over the country and the entire world rejoiced. Bem vindo ao Rio de Janeiro, G20 delegates! The #G20 meet in Rio de Janeiro this week, amidst a troubled and increasingly complex geopolitical environment. 1. When #Indonesia hosted the G20 in Bali in 2022, the world seemed a safer, more predictable place. Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping had a “candid, in-depth and constructive” discussion about US-China relations; the G20 issued a joint statement in which “most members condemned the war in Ukraine”; and Indonesia announced the JETP - an ambitious USD 20 billion energy transition plan and the largest climate finance transaction in history. 2. Two years later, US-China relations remain strained, and are likely to deteriorate further as Trump assumes office in January; the war in Ukraine rages on, with no end in sight; and hardly any funds have been disbursed under the JETP. 3. This year’s summit is also taking place during a time of regime change, with G20 members Argentina, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, and the UK under new leadership, and Trump poised to take over the reins of the world’s largest economy and sole superpower when he assumes office in January. 4. The motto for this year’s G20 summit is “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet”, and host G20 Brasil 2024 has set three main agenda priorities: (i) social inclusion and the fight against hunger; (ii) energy transition and sustainable development in its social, economic and environmental aspects; and (iii) reform of global governance institutions. 5. The most challenging issues facing the world today transcend borders, cultures, and civilisations, and their solutions must therefore be multilateral. The G20 is a strategic platform for securing future global economic growth, and prosperity. Its importance is not only because the group accounts for approximately two-thirds of the world’s population, 85% of global GDP, and 75% of the world's total trade, but also in its broad representation, as the group includes both affluent developed nations and rapidly growing emerging economies. May marks our third month diving into discussions with the B20 Task Forces and the Action Council. It's a key time for Chairs, Co-Chairs, and members as we review the latest draft of recommendations for the G20. Here are two insights from the process so far: 1. Business leaders acknowledge that global challenges are well identified. What we need now is action. Concrete proposals are essential to tackle these issues. 2. The big task is pinpointing the actions that will make a real difference toward our goals. Choosing the most effective strategies and measure their impact is the real challenge. As we keep pushing these global initiatives forward, I’d like the PMOs in our B20 Secretariat team to share two key takeaways from their experience in these groups.
