Drone Warfare in Manipur: Bomb Attacks Escalate Violence, Raise National Security Concerns and Geopolitical Tensions   Readmore: https://lnkd.in/duahj4au The northeastern state of Manipur, which has been a flashpoint for ethnic and communal violence for years, has witnessed a significant escalation in conflict with two separate drone bomb attacks in the Koutruk and Senjam Chirang areas of Imphal West district. These attacks, which occurred over consecutive days, resulted in the deaths of two people, including a woman, and left 12 others injured. The use of drone bombs marks a troubling new chapter in the region's ongoing violence, raising serious concerns about national security and the involvement of external actors. The Role of Drug Cartels The northeastern region of India, particularly Manipur, is part of the Golden Triangle, a region notorious for drug production that includes parts of Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos. The government’s crackdown on drugs between 2022 and 2023, combined with the lack of proper border fencing in Manipur, is a key reason behind the ongoing unrest. India’s efforts to secure the border with fencing have faced resistance, with some citing tribal rights and the need for free movement across the border. Currently, the area along the border, 5-10 kilometers on either side, remains a free-flow zone where drug production and cultivation continue. The recent crackdown by the BJP-led government on drug trafficking in Manipur has likely played a role in the escalation of violence. The government has seized significant amounts of drugs and destroyed large swathes of poppy fields used for drug cultivation.  When the crackdown began, government data shows that drugs worth ₹6,000 crores were seized. Along with this, 200 hectares of land used for drug cultivation were destroyed. A total of 366 cases were registered, leading to the arrest of 2,000 individuals on narcotics charges, with bail being denied to many of them. These actions have likely provoked a violent response from those involved in the drug trade. The involvement of international drug cartels, possibly supported by figures like George Soros, adds another layer of complexity to the situation. Soros has been accused of funding various movements around the world, including those in Myanmar, and his involvement in the region raises questions about the true motives behind the violence. An engaging view of India's foreign policy concerns and areas that will need our attention. Ambassador Sujan R Chinoy, Director general of the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses is worth a deep listen, this election season - making the case for balanced aggression (my phrase). While it needs an entire post in itself - the political debates in GE-24 continue to remain at the level of pedestrian idealism perpetuated by the intellectual grandees of socialism/leftism/left-liberalism. In this environment, Amb. Chinoy's views foregrounds foreign/defence policy concerns, for the Centre. The Left-liberal intellectual position in its 21st century avatar, denuded and delusional through its faux-idealism, is largely a fig-leaf, used by politicians in India as a technique-in-perpetuity to misdirect from grimy political corruption. The rich vs poor debate, abadi-haq etc serve as useful deflections, the art of raising the consciousness of the "poor", not for social-mobility, but to harvest their votes - without having to deliver any significant impact on infrastructure, means of livelihood, basic shelter, health and sanitation. Unless, you consider the rabbit-out-of-the-hat money-printing economics as a reasonable solution - (my post on dimsums and all that!) https://lnkd.in/g2n669rx The reduction of the electoral debate to ideological cliches like "autocracy" "fascism" and "backsliding of democracy", interpreted for convenience, and the sudden coordinated attempt in the international media to paint a narrative that delegitimizes, conflicts with the more confident reality on the ground - and is evasive on real issues that matter to people. [1:12:18] onwards has some interesting views on asymmetrical threats from non-state / quasi-state actors and new identity groupings whose interests are vested in a transnational alliance - often contrasting with national positions - insidious and sometimes useful, depending on how it plays out. With social media and connectivity, we now have a "level playing field" for free speech. The consequence - the equivocation and support for all kinds of kooky theories from amorphous entities whose primary allegiance and interests are hard to fathom. The other consequence of this "transnational appeal" - Actors and even institutions have begun treating the socially-constructed truths of their "ideological" positions as transcending the state, and in effect, dampening and sometimes aggressively negating the need for negotiation, within the societies of their existence.

For instance, limited #education options lead to lower-paying #jobs, reducing income and access to #credit, #healthcare, and #education. The 2024 #Global #Multidimensional #Poverty #Index report highlights that 84% of the world's poor live in rural areas, with India being one of the countries with the largest number of poor individuals. Addressing rural poverty requires a multifaceted approach, incorporating #education, #economic #empowerment, and social inclusion strategies. Reforming #policies and #programs, such as those supported by the UNAccc (UNITY OF NATIONS ACTION FOR CLIMATE CHANGE COUNCIL) , can play a crucial role in addressing these #socioeconomic determinants. In a country like India, there is often conflict between pursuing the national agenda-involving all states, political parties and other stakeholders - and a state’s agenda to fulfil its constitutional obligations on agriculture. While the former wants to centralize agriculture (ironically despite the profusion of decentralized digital public infrastructure), the latter is working in the opposite direction to resist the centralization of an essential state subject. Can AgDx Index work with public and private institutional players in providing the moorings for not just competitive federalism, but also cooperative federalism? To build a consensus framework between the Center and the State, we need trustable public scorecards and indices that can assess and accelerate the penetration, maturity, and impact of Agri Digitalisation across Indian States using publicly available data.
