Here is my takeaway from the Pr.Esther Duflo's conference at the University of Lausanne - UNIL Pr. Duflo has been an inspiration since the beginning of my career. Later, as I have been teaching Microeconomics 101, her book "Poor Economics" is the first one I recommend to read. I could have said 1000 things about her work and this insightful conference. But, something resonated this evening in me that resonated during my whole academic career. 1. There are no simple answers. Many people are vocal about easy solutions, populists love this, and a big part of the population would rather hear that someone KNOWS. If I have learned anything during my Ph.D, a decade of scientific research, and during this evening of the conference was true that there are no simple answers. Hence, in this complex situation, academia plays a key role in tackling with rigor and hopefully objectively the big questions of our time to support society! 2. Academic research loses most of its value if it stays in academia It is necessary to do research that matters for society, to communicate it, but also to connect with all the stakeholders: NGOs, politicians, the industry, the population etc. Otherwise, it would just remain an egoistic race for more citations to brag in front of colleagues and junior researchers (as outside academia, nobody knows what a top 5 or A journal is). Pr. Duflo's career is a testimony that it is possible. It seems to me with the numerous initiatives (among others Enterprise for Society Center (E4S)) the University of lausanne is going in this direction as well. So thank you University of Lausanne - UNIL , HEC Lausanne - The Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Lausanne Sebastien Houde Frédéric Herman Marianne Schmid Mast Jean-Pierre Danthine Özge Aydogan Ralph Ossa Gilles Carbonnier for the organisation and participation.

PhD: Doctor of Philosophy – More Than Just a Title The title "PhD" carries a weighty significance, yet its essence often gets overshadowed by the focus on specialization. Let's dissect this acronym. "Ph" denotes philosophy, not in the conventional sense of pondering life's big questions, but rather as a testament to a way of thinking. It's about cultivating a sharp, analytical mind capable of tackling complex problems and innovating solutions. The "Doctor" part speaks to the depth of expertise and mastery in a particular field. However, it's surprising how often the "Ph" in "PhD" gets overlooked or underappreciated. Many individuals holding this prestigious title might opt to downplay its philosophical roots, emphasizing their specialization instead. But I challenge this notion. The true essence of a PhD lies not solely in the specialized knowledge gained but in the mindset it instills – a mindset of inquiry, critical thinking, and problem-solving. It's about having the ability to analyze, synthesize, and create new knowledge, transcending the boundaries of any single field. When I introduce myself as a "Ph," I'm not just highlighting my expertise in a specific domain; I'm underscoring my commitment to a broader intellectual journey. I'm signaling that my value extends beyond my area of specialization – that I bring to the table a holistic approach to understanding and addressing complex challenges. So, the next time you encounter someone with a PhD, remember that behind that title lies not just a specialist but a thinker, a problem-solver, a "Ph" in the truest sense of the word. And perhaps, you might even consider embracing the "Ph" in your own journey, recognizing its significance in shaping not just what you know but how you think. #PhD #Philosophy #Thinking #Students #Gradschool #Education
