What have social media algorithms and now generative AI bots done to #blogging? They've made me explore alternatives, after being a more or less active blogger for 16 years. Tech giants have made it increasinly difficult to achieve the kind of impact that blogs still had a decade ago. The first big obstacle came with these social media walled gardens (like LinkedIn) that wanted to capture as much content inside their walls as possible. Today, everything you put into the public web is going to be scraped by bots to train Large Language Models (LLM). There's no effective way to stop the Gen AI chatbots to become a better resource for information discovery than search engines. ChatGPT, Copilot and the likes will provide the information you posted online, without sending any visitors to your blog anymore. All of this is breaking the fundamental connections that blog authors and blog readers used to have in the golden Web 2.0 era. Community driven development of persistent audiences is getting replaced with bigger & bigger data machines that decide who gets to see what. What can writers do? Well, as the world around us changes, so must our ways. Instead of making all of our thoughts available for Gen AI to digest and then spit out, perhaps it's worthwhile publishing it only to verified humans? This is where a #newsletter format can be a valid alternative.
