"In a consumer society, contentment is a radical proposition. Recognizing abundance rather than scarcity undermines an economy that thrives by creating unmet desires. Gratitude cultivates an ethic of fullness, but the economy needs emptiness. Gratitude doesn't send you out shopping to find satisfaction; it comes as a gift rather than a commodity, subverting the foundation of the whole economy. That's good medicine for land and people alike" - Robin Wall Kimmerer It's a truly soul nuturing book that hit me on so many levels. Brading Sweetgrass brings us back to what is true and beautiful in life. I kept coming back to this idea while going camping this weekend with my family. The idea that what we celebrate in our modern society is completely backwards. How its consistently a regenerating experience going into nature, seeing a harmony, feeling present and gratitude for the encounters with wildlife... How the last 6 weeks were personally the hardest 6 weeks I've had to endure in a long time. How quickly I seemed to spin out into an anxious mindset due to the pressures of society, status and our narratives of what's 'correct' in life. And yet, one weekend enveloped in the outdoors, family and wildlife brought me back to a balance I forgot was always there. A humbling reminder of what is true, sacred and deserves nothing but all our efforts to protect. --- My newsletter has been on a short break while I recharge.
