As I start grading the first written assignments from my students in which they had to discuss the inherent risks in food ingredients I found myself feeling extremely grateful for all the experiences and knowledge I’ve been able to cram in my 15 years working in the food industry. Teaching allows me to use this experience to mentor and mold the future food scientists, quality managers, R&D managers etc. I’d encourage anyone who has the opportunity (and the time!) to teach to give it a shot. You’ll likely find yourself falling back in love with what you do, and I can guarantee it will make you a more well-rounded professional. I am a believer that we need more industry experts in academia. Related side note: Every semester students in the program ask me “how did you get to where you are?” My answer always starts with “I graduated with an M.S. in Food Science and finding a job without experience was tough, so I took a temp to hire position at a cold, wet, and often stinky fish processing plant where I did the pre-op shift at 4am and got paid less than $20/hour. But… within less than 3 years I was a manager overseeing quality/food safety/regulatory compliance in 3 locations.” You have to start somewhere, and it won’t always be the glamorous 6-figure job they tell you about in school. Once you have your foot in the door it’s all about grit, fearlessness, communication skills and effectively applying what you learned when you were an academic. #academiameetsindustry #chapmanuniversity

This is such an exciting program, the food industry coming together to solve the industry wide problem, a growing shortage of food safety auditors. For this program to have an impact we need more interns which means more sponsors and more partners. If your company wants to help solve the food safety auditor shortage and contribute meaningfully to the next generation of food safety auditor skills, knowledge and experience, please reach out to the AIFST. The future depends on what you do today. - Mahatma Gandhi
🎉🌟 Exciting News from AIFST! 🌟🎉 We're thrilled to announce the launch of our inaugural Food Safety Auditor Intern Program! Thanks to collaborative efforts across industries and with key stakeholders, we've developed this program to provide practical industry experience to food science and technology professionals aspiring to pursue food safety auditing as a career of choice. Meet our interns, Anna Lovett and Erika Gomez Alfaro, who embarked on their placements last month. Over the next two years, they'll undergo comprehensive training and gain practical experience under the guidance and support of AIFST, managing certification bodies, industry partners, and the NSW Food Authority. Focused on the critical need for new third-party food safety auditors, our program aligns with the qualifications and requirements of the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI). Each intern will be employed and supervised by a certification body for two years, with additional six-month rotations at three different industry partner sites. The industry partners hosting the interns are the Sydney sites of ARYZTA, Martin Brower, Baiada Poultry, and Chef Fresh (Coles Manufacturing site). Anna Lovett is interning with Intertek SAI Global, while Erika Gomez Alfaro is working with BSI Group. This collaborative effort across industries presents an exciting pathway for advancing food safety auditing as a preferred career in the Australian food industry. It holds immense potential to establish a continuous and systematic method for nurturing an auditor pipeline in Australia. Interested in becoming an industry partner? Reach out to us at [email protected] to find out more! Join us in welcoming Anna and Erika to the program! "Respected food technologists, I offer my sincerest apologies if my words have caused any offense. Many of you have achieved esteemed positions in the food industry, and I implore you to reciprocate by helping others. Unfortunately, some students and aspiring food technologists are met with rejection when seeking opportunities. They're often told that having influential connections or relatives is a prerequisite for hiring. I urge you, esteemed food technologists, please don't turn away talented individuals. Everyone possesses unique skills and deserves a chance to showcase their knowledge. By giving them an opportunity, you may uncover innovative talent that elevates both your organization and the industry. The food industry desperately needs skilled food technologists. I speak from experience, having faced numerous challenges, struggles, and familial pressures as a food technologist myself. I humbly request that you demonstrate empathy and support emerging professionals. Your guidance can transform their career trajectories

When watching this video, my thoughts immediately turned to the critical issue of Food Safety being conducted by unqualified individuals. The recent increase in Food Safety Incidents in Gauteng has resulted in 16 people dying since February and its mostly children. It is disheartening to see that in the background, a good section of the Food Industry is quite content with having Food Safety and Quality managed by non-professionals. Not so much in larger Co-operations, but quite prevelant in owner managed SMME's. Food Safety professionals are seen as paper pushers who are at work to "clock the hours and get the money" 😐 The money which is actually not even market related🏃 So why this attitude? Is this driven by economic factors? If so, has a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis been conducted to assess the true economic impact? What is the value of a human life? Would it be cost effective if it was your child being burie? Perhaps it is time to reconsider the approach and appeal to Managing Directors. Hire graduates Hire graduates Hire graduates Hire graduates Hire graduates Hire graduates Hire professionals Hire professionals We have esteemed Universities that are creating a pool of highly competent Food Safety Professionals ready to safeguard our well-being. It's essential to leverage the skills and knowledge these graduates bring to ensure our safety. If you are a Managing Director for a Food company and you are unsure where to get these graduates or you feel that they are none out there, just post right here on LinkedIn, you will see just how many they are. Hire same and let them ensure you don't kill people. #FoodSafety #QualityControl #HireGraduates #Professionalism #PublicSafety #UniversityEducation
