Thanks Karenin for the generous feature! One of the most frequent questions my peers ask me: why didn't you end up accepting the "Big 3" universities' offers into their CS programmes? Why go with Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD)? Sometimes I wonder that too. They have access to a wider network, enjoy greater funding for their events (a persistent roadblock we faced while running SUTD SEVEN), and their intense competition is a rich battleground for personal development and growth. But SUTD offers a different kind of pedagogy, one driven by projects and interdisciplinary learning. An environment that brings passionate individuals together, to work on ideas that go beyond grades or careers. The SUTD Tech Entre Programme (STEP) has allowed me to stretch my wings in the Bay Area alongside new friends from University of California, Berkeley. And I will soon embark on a new journey in Zhejiang University to learn from their best, while immersing myself in the Chinese markets. It is this unique East-meets-West approach to entrepreneurship that I find irreplaceable. It wasn't always smooth-sailing though. We had to fight hard to curate a community of builders that shared our energy. And the struggles of a smaller, newer university never really go away. But it is that tight-knit bond you share with your college friends that can bring you to adapt more quickly and learn more deeply. Once again, many thanks to Karenin for the OSPI article! Entrepreneurship is the only way out for the MENA region and Africa. Traditional paths relying on natural resources and basic industries haven't managed to solve the high unemployment rates or spurred enough economic growth. The International Labour Organization points out that these regions need a new approach to diversify their economies and create jobs, making entrepreneurship essential, not optional. Regions like Silicon Valley and Singapore show us how. They have laws and cultures that help new businesses start, fail safely, and try again quickly. This environment lets innovation thrive and creates more jobs. Considering the young, tech-savvy population and strategic location of the MENA region, adopting a similar approach could dramatically change its economic landscape. It's crucial to wonder, then: can embracing entrepreneurship not only diversify the economy but also position the MENA region as a leader in global innovation and sustainable development?

Today's post continues with the presentation of the next chapter from the book "Entrepreneurship in the Digital Era - Case Studies, Approaches, and Tools for Ecosystems, Business Models, and Technologies". 😊   The title of the chapter is: Classification of Born-Global Firms: The Case of Japanese High-Tech Startups   💡Authors: SAKI OTOMO, Shuichi Ishida & Mariko Yang-Yoshihara   📖 Content: Early internationalization and success in foreign markets play an important role in both a firm’s growth and its impact on the global economy. We conducted a study of Japanese high-tech startups to identify the process of early internationalization in firms with a large domestic market and few incentives to internationalize. We found that international entrepreneurship and the conditions in the domestic market affect early internationalization. Our case study shows that the size of the domestic market is not a deciding factor in a firm’s decision to internationalize. Geographic considerations and types of technology were identified as other factors affecting early internationalization.
