Toilets are more than just facilities—they’re essential spaces that impact our health, dignity, and progress. Yet billions still lack access to safe sanitation, facing risks from conflict, climate change, and infrastructure neglect. Let’s highlight three key messages this World Toilet Day: 🔹 Toilets as Places of Peace Sanitation facilities should be safe and secure, but for many, they remain vulnerable. It’s time to protect these vital spaces for everyone. 🔹 Toilets as Places of Protection Effective sanitation services shield us from harmful waste and prevent the spread of pollution and disease. When systems fail, entire communities are at risk. 🔹 Toilets as Places of Progress Sanitation is a human right that upholds dignity and empowers all, especially women and girls. Increased investment and improved governance in sanitation are crucial to building a fairer, healthier world. 🚽 3.5 billion people – nearly half the world’s population – lack access to safe sanitation. This means no access to toilets that aren’t shared with other households, and no safe treatment or disposal of wastewater. 💧 Today is World Toilet Day and this year’s theme, "Toilets are a Place for Peace," reminds us that these essential spaces are about more than hygiene – they are about safety, dignity, and resilience. Yet for billions of people, sanitation is under threat from conflict, climate change, disasters, and neglect. Why do toilets matter for peace? 🚨 When sanitation systems are disrupted by conflict or extreme weather, untreated waste contaminates water and soil, spreading deadly diseases like cholera. ⚖️ Safe toilets create equity and opportunity. They protect women and girls from violence, preserve their dignity, and allow them to pursue education and livelihoods. 🌱 Investing in resilient sanitation is investing in the future of communities – ensuring stability even in the face of crises. However, a well-functioning toilet isn’t just about infrastructure; it’s about accountability, governance, and ensuring that every person, regardless of circumstance, is protected by their basic human rights. This is why systems strengthening is essential, because only by addressing the root causes, building resilient institutions, and fostering inclusive collaboration can we create sustainable solutions that guarantee access to safe sanitation for all. #WorldToiletDay #ToiletsForPeace #SanitationForAll #SDG6 #SystemsStrengthening Welthungerhilfe (WHH) Viva con Agua

World Toilet Day 2024. Toilets: A place for peace. One of the targets of Sustainable Development Goal 6 is 'Safe toilets for all by 2030’ but the world is seriously off track in meeting this target. There are still 3.5 billion people that live without safely managed sanitation and this includes 419 million people who practise open defecation. Sanitation and water services should be effective, resilient and accessible for all. The UN highlights 3 Key messages that we should know on World Toilet Day: • Toilets are a place for peace. This essential space, at the centre of our lives, should be safe and secure. But for billions of people, sanitation is under threat from conflict, climate change, disasters and neglect. • Toilets are a place for protection. By creating a barrier between us and our waste, sanitation services are essential for public and environmental health. But when toilet systems are inadequate, damaged or broken, pollution spreads and deadly diseases get unleashed. • Toilets are a place for progress. Sanitation is a human right. ‘Safe toilets for all by 2030’ is a key target of SDG 6 – but the world is seriously off track, as highlighted by UN 2.0 | United Nations. Untreated human waste remains a pressing challenge. #NMDC continues to rise to the call with the construction of 2089 toilets in schools, 249 household toilets in Bastar helping restore dignity, and enhancing safety. Faster action to improve and protect people’s access to sanitation is critical to building a fairer, more peaceful world. This World Toilet Day’s theme ‘Sanitation for Peace’ is a crucial reminder of how essential spaces at the centre of our lives, should be safe and secure. #SanitationForPeace #WorldToiletDay #SwachhBharatMission #ResponsibleMining

It's World Toilet Day! A day to recognize that many people around the world do not have a place to go. This essential space, at the center of our lives, should be safe and secure. But for billions of people, sanitation is under threat from conflict, climate change, disasters and neglect. ‘Safe toilets for all by 2030’ is one of the targets of Sustainable Development Goal 6 – but the world is off track. 3.5 billion people still live without safely managed sanitation, including 419 million who practice open defecation. Faster action to improve and protect people’s access to sanitation is critical to building a fairer, more peaceful world. Conflict, extreme weather events and disasters can destroy, damage or disrupt sanitation services. When toilet systems don’t work – or don’t exist – untreated human waste spreads in the environment, unleashing deadly diseases such as cholera. Together we can ensure that sanitation and water services are resilient, effective, accessible to everyone and shielded from harm.
