There are 22 PC games sold 2M+ copies this year, here is my 7 key take aways from the sub-genre breakdown. 🥇 To make a hit, Action games are your best bet. 🥈 You don’t have to make a multiplayer game. 🥉 Single player games need a strong narrative. 4️⃣ While RPGs made a lot of noise in the media, successful combo is an action-adventure. 5️⃣ Not many new players in PvP, because Well, they take forever to balance. 6️⃣ There are 10+ ''2024 release'' games, Shows market is open to new players. 7️⃣ UGC has almost no place on Steam Charts. What do you think? Let me know if you want to see similar breakdowns or charts! Cheers! PS: This list is based of Steam Charts so big UGC names like Fortnite and Roblox so they should be taken in to consideration separately PS: Palworld's clear dominance will shake the market a bit, along with Hell Diver 2's exceptional revenue. No UGC? 😹 UGC is why players still play half the games on this list! Baldur’s Gate III: Baldur’s Gate III toolkit Dota2: originated from a mod of Warcraft 3 RD2: massive modding community enabled by RedM, acquired by Rockstar Counter Strike: decades worth of mods (COD, Apex Legends, and the Finals all take pull game modes from these btw). Team Fortress: a decades worth of mods on Steam workshop
Indie mega hit, Balatro, recently announced having sold 2M copies, too. Source: https://www.pcgamer.com/games/card-games/balatro-has-sold-2-million-copies-free-major-gameplay-update-coming-next-year/
The interesting question in a year where nearly 20 000 games are released, is not why did 22 do well, but why did the rest do so badly?
"Units sold" for f2p games :))) And compared the number with premium games- yeah very relevant.
How do you count the unit sales of the Banana F2P bot farm scam? 😅
Are free downloads considered unit sales now? Shouldn't we dive into IAP numbers for games like The First Descendant instead?
Only game I own is Left 4 Dead, and I have it on my 360. Not much of a fan of PC games unless it’s like The Sims or SimCity.
Very surprised about Portal still selling like hot cake 🍰
Are you also measuring against % of total games sold per genre? If 60% of games being released are tagging themselves as Action, it’s a bit different story.

4moDo you know that DOTA 2, Apex, and War Thunder are free-to-play games? How did you figure out their copies sales numbers?
