If I was Biden's marketing/brand strategist, here's what I would tell him.
1️⃣
Marketing can't fix product.
I can create an amazing campaign to sell orange soda, but if customers buy it and it tastes like lemon, trust is tarnished. My brand won't survive. The same thing is happening here. Biden is telling us everything is OK, but there's tangible evidence to the contrary.
▶What Biden should do:
First things first, Biden must restore confidence in him as a product. Take a cognitive test. Show us the results. Provide real evidence to support your talking points. And then, do it again. And again.
Show > Tell.
2️⃣
Put people first.
I believe Biden is a good man who's dedicated his life to serving his country. But in his recent interview with ABC News he came off as self-serving and egotistical, not so unlike his opponent.
When asked: "And if you stay in and Trump is elected and everything you're warning about comes to pass, how will you feel in January?" His answer was all about him. It showed little regard for our country and voters.
▶ What Biden should do:
Biden must show that he cares about people first, and himself second. This is not about him, it's about the country. Instead of saying that "only the Lord Almighty" could compel him to quit, he should anchor his message on the fact that he wants the BEST person to be at the top of the ticket. Of course, he believes himself to be that person.
Protect the people. Then, protect the product.
3️⃣
Stop saying "Look, folks..."
I have no smart marketing savvy about this one.
▶ What Biden should do:
Just stop. Please. 🙏
Now, for a larger, (maybe) more controversial opinion...
In 1982 12 people died as a result of cyanide-laced Tylenol poisoning. The Tylenol team's initial response involved various marketing activities. But ultimately, what restored full confidence in their brand was the introduction of triple safety seal packaging.
▶ In order to save their brand, their product had to change. ◀
This is the biggest question looming over Biden's candidacy. If Biden openly takes a cognitive test and it doesn't go well.... he has a product problem that he can't fix. When it comes to illness, there's no equivalent to the triple safety seal packaging. In this case, IMO, he would have no other option but to step down. Because again: marketing, PR, comms, talking points... they're all great, but they don't work unless they're truthful.
One more time for the folks in the back: Marketing can't fix product.
