Marketing your business is like a ring toss game, which strategy are you using? As a kid every year my parents would take me to the CNE. It's a giant exhibition in Toronto with rides and games, shows and of course lots of food. One of the famous games at the CNE (and most amusement parks) is the ring toss game. Trying to get one of those small rings onto any bottle, let alone the coloured ones is not easy. I've found that there are two strategies people use to try to win this game and they both relate to how you market your business. Some people believe that the best way to win is to take the whole bucket and toss all the rings in one throw. The rings go everywhere, but the hope is that one of the rings will hit its mark. The second approach is to try to use skill by aiming and throwing one ring at a time. In the ring toss game that we call marketing, you can use mass marketing to hit as many people as possible with your message hoping that you will land a few... Or you can specifically target your audience, and use your skill and messaging to stand out and try to land clients. Both strategies can work. The mass marketing strategy requires large numbers and a bigger upfront investment. The targetted approach requires skill, market research and time. The channels you choose and the messaging will depend on which approach you take. Email can be mass marketing (some people call this spam) or it can be a targeted approach. Linkedin can also be used for mass marketing or a targeted approach. When your competitors are using one approach, it can be advantageous to use the other. Which approach are you using?
