Dig deep and don’t quit! It’s that time of the year for many youngsters. Exam results. Don’t worry if they aren’t what you wanted. It isn’t the end of the world. I was top of my school for years and destined to go straight to law school with straight As but that didn’t happen, Due to some issues at home, my final year at school was not pretty and I did not get the grades I needed. I got into a degree course that had a lower entrance requirement. I studied hard and switched to law. I got rejected by most of the big firms without even getting an interview. Which of the big law firm wants a kid who doesn’t have straight As 🤦♀️ Anyway, hundreds of letters later and even calls to partners, I got a training contract. My talents were recognised and I end up working for Dundas & Wilson. I get head hunted. I become a partner early. I come to Cayman and work with the top firms. I now run my own business. I am not boasting about where I am but just putting it out there that it is absolutely not the end of the world if it doesn’t all go to plan. You might need to work a bit harder than those with the straight As to get ahead but that in itself is no big thing. And to the law firms out there, school grades mean nothing! If at first you don’t succeed, just keep trying. If you have the will you will get there! I’ve just realised that, almost 2 years into business, I’ve never actually introduced myself on here! 🫣🤣🤓 Well, here goes! I read Law at Cambridge and trained at Magic Circle international law firm Allen & Overy. I spent several years as a commercial litigator in the City, acting for the likes of Ryanair and the Belgian government I have 20 years' experience as a Solicitor, having fee-earned, headed departments, brought in work, been partner, undertaken myriad roles (colp, cofa, etc), managed staff, started up teams and firms and grown them and taken over firms as senior partner (I ran my full-service law firm single-handedly for 5 years) and improved / grown / sold them. This has given me a wealth of experience and knowledge that I now impart in order to assist others on their legal and business journeys I built up my previous firm from 9 staff to 53 and sold within 4 years I am now a mentor, coach, NED and trainer to lawyers, law firms and law firm owners, helping with everything from how to bring in work, maximise billing and cash, market and network, grow, excel in client care, impart value, use the magic triangle, being commercial, cross-selling, compliance, trouble-shooting, to strategy, being a shoulder to cry on, managing people (clients / staff / external), differentiation in a crowded marketplace, and more ❓❓❓Are you / your fee earners confidently and happily recording and billing at least 5 chargeable hours per day and £20,000 each per month? I had some thoughts yesterday on the widely reported costs hearing taking place this week in the 'Wagatha Christie' saga. Every six months I provide training to new disputes trainees on case and cost management and, as part of that, I take them through the Precedent H budget. We talk about the purpose of costs management, the court's active involvement in case and costs management, and the importance of keeping costs under review. We discuss the benefits of costs transparency and how this fits in with the Overriding Objective. And then a case like this comes along! Perhaps it does highlight a need for greater clarity in the Precedent H statement of truth. It certainly appears to demonstrate that ordering parties to prepare cost budgets is not a fail safe route to parties keeping costs reasonable and proportionate or to costs transparency.

During my years as a general counsel outside of private practice, one of my biggest frustrations was the inability of the legal profession to clearly explain to me how they were going to charge for the work they were doing, followed by a failure to keep me updated on fees as the work progressed. Things change during the course of a project - that's fine. But not keeping me up-to-date on fees at the same time - that's not fine. The problem is that lawyers are academically trained to be lawyers. All of the, in my view, important client management skills are often overlooked during a lawyer's education. At EMW Law LLP - B Corp Certified, we think that we're pretty good when it comes to conversations about fees. But there's always room for improvement, and we know we can't afford to be complacent.
