Our scientific partner Johannes Kepler Universität Linz published an interesting article about our joint project ZEUS in the “Standard” on 12 February 2024. Industry causes climate-damaging emissions, but captured carbon dioxide can be converted into valuable raw materials, as researchers in Linz have discovered. The chemical conversion of CO2 into valuable chemical raw materials is one of the “dream reactions” for sustainable production, with the electrocatalysis of carbon dioxide playing a promising role. The ZEUS project (Zero Emission throUgh Sector Coupling) for the development of CO2 electrocatalysts at a larger scale is realized by renowned research institutions and companies, including the metallurgical competence centre K1-MET. 🔋 Localised #battery value chains in #Europe – How strong is the announced political support? 📣 Our new P3 whitepaper is online now! 📣 🌐 Europe holds a strategic position in the battery #value #chain, driven by a robust automotive legacy and an increased focus on reducing #CO2 emissions. With the resilience of future value chains in mind, the #EU is actively and consistently working to further strengthen the European next-gen technology ecosystem in order to compete with incentive systems like the US Inflation Reduction Act. 📝 To achieve this, the EU parliament recently adopted the “Critical Raw Materials Act”, a second legislation named “Net Zero Industry Act” is scheduled to follow shortly. With those two acts, the EU aims to foster industrialization and secure #raw #materials for the emerging battery industry.   🔎 This #whitepaper assesses both acts, focusing on their implication for the European battery industry. The stated target production capacities of 2030 are evaluated for cathode active material, anode active material, and battery production. Further upstream, planned extraction, processing, and recycling quotas are critically assessed under consideration of current ramp-up announcements. 📈 Ultimately, an overall impact #assessment for both acts is carried out to evaluate their influence on the European value chain ramp-up. Sustainable, energy-efficient recycling of lithium-ion batteries with an emphasis on early lithium recovery. The AURRELIA project aims to recover all recyclable materials. Starting with a wet shredding process, lithium is separated at an early stage to increase its yield compared to state-of-the-art processes. The solid materials from the shredding process are sorted and classified to ensure further processing. Valuable materials such as cobalt and nickel are recovered from the so-called black mass using green leaching agents to minimize the ecological footprint of the process. Innovative membrane processes are used to purify and concentrate the lithium bearing solution. Finally, carbon dioxide is used to produce a pure lithium product. The promising results of the project encourage us to further exploit its potential. To this end, the project partners are looking for industrial partners to carry out further research in a follow-up project. Want to find out more? Still very worthwhile reading and reviewing 👍 "Concentrating on a single technology will result in a lack of resources, even in a circular economy. The FVV study consciously works with what are known as ›100 per cent scenarios‹, as these enable an excellent comparison of the environmental impact of individual technologies throughout the entire energy chain and the vehicle life cycle, while also allowing bottlenecks to be determined. Comparing the demand for critical raw materials with the available reserves and resources shows that – even assuming a high recycling rate – certain raw materials will become very scarce if the rest of the world follows the European model and uses the same technologies. The raw materials in question depend on the selected combination of energy carrier and powertrain. For example, if the selected technology is battery electric vehicles using the currently dominant battery technology (lithium-ion batteries with nickelmanganese-cobalt cathodes), cobalt and lithium availability will be the limiting factor for the ramp-up speed, and this will have a significant impact on the cost of the batteries. Moving to solid-state batteries with a pure lithium anode will significantly exacerbate the scarcity of resources in the lithium supply chain. For fuel cell powertrains, the availability of platinum is a highly limiting factor. In a scenario in which the entire world transitions to 100 per cent fuel cell use, all known resources will not be sufficient, let alone those that can be tapped in an economically viable manner.
