K1-MET at the “Wasserstoff.Brücke Wels” at the Wels campus of the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria from 4 to 5 November 2024 The event brought together students and companies focusing on hydrogen and enabled a low-threshold exchange. Irmela Kofler, Area Management Decarbonisation & Sector Coupling of K1-MET, gave a presentation entitled “Kohlenstoffarme Stahlerzeugung der Zukunft” (Low-carbon steel production of the future). The presentation showed decarbonisation paths that are being taken by the steel industry in order to drive forward the energy transition and transformation to climate-neutral and efficient processes. Renewable electrical energy and subsequently produced “green” hydrogen play a key role here. photo credit: B. Last week from 24 to 25 October 2024, a successful kick-off meeting of our new project PHOENIX took place in Genk, Belgium. Our colleague Nina Plankensteiner presented the role of K1-MET GmbH and Universität Innsbruck in leading the CO2 electrolysis work in WP2. In this WP we will work closely together with Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin and JBF Global Europe BV in Belgium and seek to increase the energy efficiency of CO2 electrolyzers. The Horizon Europe funded project brings together leading research institutions in Europe to pioneer next-generation photo-electro-integrated technologies and contribute to the innovation ecosystem in Europe. We are excited to work with such an esteemed consortium and look forward to a great collaboration in the next 3 years. photo from left to right: Htoo Thiri Htet (imec/Hasselt), Kerstin Steidle (LEITAT), Ainhoa Cots Segura, PhD (LEITAT), Sudhanshu Shukla (imec/imo-imomec), Sebastian Hedwig (FHNW), Daniely R. K1-MET presented new advances in hydrogen plasma smelting reduction at the „9th European Coke and Ironmaking Congress (ECIC)“ in Bardolino, Italy, from 16 to 18 October 2024. Researchers from K1-MET, including PhD students, Postdocs, Project Managers and Team Leads, were excited to share some of their ongoing work in cooperation with Montanuniversitaet Leoben and present new findings to their peers in the steelmaking community. The speakers were Christa Muehlegger, Cameron Quick, Bernhard Adami, Michael Zarl and Thomas Nanz. Moreover, K1-MET contributed to other presentations. They discussed several key aspects of the hydrogen plasma smelting reduction (HPSR) technology, of which K1-MET stands at the forefront. The topics included high resolution in-situ sensing, the behaviour of selected elements in the metallurgical slag, and also a novel feeding approach inspired by electric smelting furnaces. In addition to sharing their excitement with the wider community, the attendees were looking forward to fruitful scientific discussions, exchanging ideas and forming cooperations with similarly motivated researchers from all over Europe.
