According to the latest report from Spanish #foodtechaccelerator Eatable Adventures, Spain remains a powerhouse in the industry, attracting €226 million in investment in 2023 alone. Here's what makes Spain's foodtech scene unique: Resilience: While global foodtech investments dropped 61%, Spain saw a moderate 16% decline, showcasing its stability. Innovation: Spanish startups are tackling key challenges like climate change, population growth, and food production costs. Strong investor interest: International players like ProVeg Incubator and North South Ventures, Big Idea Ventures, and Bynd Venture Capital are taking notice. Thriving ecosystem: 420 startups are spread across Spain, with Madrid and Catalonia leading the way. Diverse focus: Agri-food tech, agritech, restaurant tech, and retail/logistics are all experiencing growth. The FoodTech 500 2023 results are out and having been chosen from an impressive pool of over 1,500 entries from 77 countries, including 4 publicly traded companies and 2 unicorns, makes my day!  I am thrilled to see Farmy No. 1 in Switzerland, No. 6 in Europe and No. 17 in the world! But also eight other Swiss Food & Nutrition Valley partners made it to this year's ranking ! Here are the Swiss shining stars: - Authena - Agrinorm - AgroSustain SA - Fruitful AI - planetary - QualityChain - SERA - UMAMI But that's not all! Many other Swiss ecosystem actors, including yamo, Mootral, Farmy, SwissDeCode, Essento Insect Food • Making insects delicious, and Koa Switzerland & Ghana, have also secured their spot on the list. While the event was primarily conducted in Spanish, I wanted to share a brief summary for those in my network who may not be fluent in the language. The discussions centered around the evolving landscape of FoodTech companies, emphasizing the crucial role of fundraising in their growth journey. Speakers shed light on how many startups are increasingly prioritizing fundraising over their day-to-day operations, sometimes to the detriment of their long-term vision. One key insight highlighted by a Nestlé representative in the room was the cautious approach of investors, who often hesitate to support startups that are directly addressing pressing issues in the food industry. This cautious stance is often justified by concerns about market readiness and consumer willingness to adopt new solutions. Overall, the meetup provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities within the FoodTech sector. In considering these insights, one question that arises is: Will traditional food companies be able to sustain themselves in the future without embracing FoodTech innovations? It's not a rant ...just questions 😌 Recently, a representative from Nestlé highlighted a challenge for them: the perceived reluctance of consumers to pay more for healthier, sustainable food options it limiting their ability to produce them. It's a valid concern, but one that warrants deeper exploration. Nestlé Research & Development, I echo your sentiment. Consumers are indeed hesitant to pay a higher price tag when they're unclear about what they're investing in. However, as a leading global food and beverage brand, it's crucial to reframe the conversation. Instead of viewing this as a barrier, why aren't we asking ourselves: How can we educate consumers? Firstly, let's shine a light on the fillers and additives present in many Nestlé Research & Development products, which we know when consumed regularity can contribute to various health issues. What if consumers knew that a slight price increase could provide them with whole, nutritious foods that enhance both physical and mental health. Secondly, let's address the staggering amount of non-recyclable packaging that ends up in landfills, impacting our environment and health. What if consumers understood that paying a bit more could lead to cleaner air and a more sustainable future? Let's resist the urge to take the easy way out. As a brand with considerable consumer influence, Nestlé Health Science, we have a responsibility to lead by example. 📊 DigitalFoodLab European FoodTech report is out! We just released its annual report on Europe's #FoodTech with a focus on investments, trends, categories, M&A, top deals... 3 of the main learnings of the report: 📉 Investments reached €4.3B in 2023. That's 35% less than in 2022 but still more than in 2020. 🌍 Investments are declining in Europe as in the rest of the world... but much less so. In 2023, Europe's FoodTech accounted for an unprecedented 35% of the global FoodTech investments! 🚜 Investments increased in AgTech and Foodscience startups, which is quite surprising given the pretty gloomy context we are in. This shows again the growing strength of the European ecosystem.
