Creativity Runs Deeper Than Language This could mean that large language models may never fully match us in creativity. When it comes to creativity, humans have no equal—neither among other species nor in comparison to current AI systems. The key aspect of thinking that underpins our unparalleled creativity is combinatorial thinking—the ability to generate an infinite number of complex ideas from a limited set of simple concepts. Combinatorial thinking seems closely tied to the use of language, which facilitates the creation and exchange of complex ideas with others. But what is the primary driver of our high-level creativity: pre-linguistic combinatorial thinking or language itself? 1) If language is the primary driver, then AI systems based on language models (which are nearly on par with humans in language use) have a good chance of catching up to and surpassing us in creativity. 2) However, if pre-linguistic combinatorial thinking is the root cause, then it's possible that language models, no matter how scaled-up, may never match our creativity. A new interdisciplinary study provides experimental evidence that combinatorial processes for forming complex ideas: - Begin to function in infants during the first year of life; - At this age, this ability is clearly not a result of language use (since language is not yet developed), but it is a precursor to learning in general.
