When your teenage movie crush* has an epic fireside chat (literally) on “AI and The Future of Storytelling” with one of your favourite philosophers and historians.   Really enjoyed watching this chat between Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Yuval Noah Harari.   Loved the insights and concepts they discussed including:   - how much of the world runs on story and the fact that large scale democracies did not exist until we could communicate with millions of people at one time (hello newspapers, television etc) - how social media and AI is destabilising democracy and the ability for us to productively talk to one another - the societal and legal impacts of recognising AI as a person   For me, they covered heavy things in an engaging, considered and very human manner.   If you’re new to AI, Joseph’s description of how large language models are made is great – in summary, humans made the data!   *who remembers 10 Things I Hate About You and 500 Days of Summer? #AI #storytelling

Imagine the possibilities! Cognitive revolution 50 thousand years ago (the invention of language for conflict resolution and knowledge transmission resulted in tool-making and trade). Agricultural revolution 12 thousand years ago (dawn of agriculture meant civilisation, cities, population growth, division of labor from surplus). Industrial revolution 200-250 years ago (harnessing energy to escape the malthusian trap and attain exponential population growth and expnential increase in wealth at the same time, creating more intelligent minds with leisure time to focus on complex problems) Digital revolution 70 years ago (computers have transformed the way we do everything from science to manufacturing and socialising leading to the society we live in now, where we come to expect a scientific breakthrough, technology invention or innovation every day when we wake up and open our phone, whereas most of our ancestors didn’t see an innovation in their lifetime) Whether we view the AI revolution as an extension of the digital revolution or a next step, we cannot imagine the possibilities it will bring in our lifetime, even less in the lifetime of our children. For us it represents just that, possibility.

This prompted me to explore the scenarios where in contrast to material displacement, structures are carved into material repository topographies. Boundaries and thresholds between the natural and the manmade are purposefully tentative suggesting a degree to ambiguity. The following spatial sequences were co-created with AI and form part of the series The Fictional Ruins. The series explore the notion of an architectural ‘ruin’ through the collective memory of AI.

This is how people saw the Ukrainian city of Sambir many years later. An old picture dated the beginning of the 20th century. Today, we’d smile at that naive vision, as it drastically differs from our present. But people back then built their predictions based on what they actually saw! The moral of the story? It makes little sense to try to predict how AI will shape our future even in 10 years, let alone further. We simply don’t know which factors could come into play. But the most important thing is that our imagination is limited to our empirical experience. So, let’s take it easy and focus on what we’re doing now, step by step. Then, it will be what it will be.
