Think of the year 2500. Cars are flying. AI has taken over.   We have baches on Mars. And Nikau is still here delivering transformative support to the people and places of our region.  How do we know that? Our model is designed so that we exist forever.   So, when we say, ‘we’re in it for the long haul’, we mean it. But being in it for the long-haul means remaining agile. It means taking opportunities to reflect so we can make sure we are fit for purpose and for the future. And it means taking a moment to determine where we are at and where we want to be. In late 2023, we did just that. We thought about the impact we want to see, the role we want to play in growing generosity and supporting our communities, and where we want to focus our attention. Long time planning, should have some good discussions.

A few thank yous are in order. Yesterday, we were invited by our partners MSS IT to participate in a roundtable on AI adoption within Local Government, hosted by Arctic Wolf. Curated by Florence Boog - the event was a total hit. And not just talking about the dhufish tartare (although that was pretty good too...) Some interesting tidbits worth sharing:- 1️⃣ Although councils must define the guardrails for AI use, enacting new policies is not on the critical path. 2️⃣ There is a greater focus on ratepayer value and business case - with the perception that AI governance is adequately covered in by existing compliance documentation. 3️⃣ Many councils have already started on AI projects, with an emphasis on "doing more with less" as they look to scale capability without proportionally scaling budget. 4️⃣ Although innovation, future-proofing and operational efficiencies are rarely highlighted among the strategic drivers for local government, there is an in-built expectation for all of these things across the traditional pillars of community engagement, sustainable growth, economic vitality, environment stewardship, cultural identity promotion, tourism development and infrastructure planning.
