Reflection on "Interconnection ~ Grounding the ICF competencies in neuroscience" Susan Britton and Jessica Burdett's article brilliantly connects coaching practices with neuroscience, offering insights into how and why coaching works. By linking the first four ICF competencies to neuroscience principles, the article provides valuable guidance for enhancing our coaching methods. For instance, understanding vagal tone in relation to ethical practice (ICF Competency #1) highlights the importance of creating a safe environment for clients. Similarly, the concepts of neuroplasticity and metacognition tied to embodying a coaching mindset (ICF Competency #2) emphasize ongoing personal and professional growth. The exploration of seeking and predictions in establishing agreements (ICF Competency #3) helps coaches support clients in managing uncertainties and focusing on their goals. Additionally, the discussion on oxytocin and emotional contagion in cultivating trust and safety (ICF Competency #4) underscores the role of empathy and emotional synchronization in building strong coaching relationships. As an ACC coach and a psychologist in training, reading this article felt like a warm validation of my journey. It's reassuring to see the scientific underpinnings of what we intuitively know works in coaching. The connection between neuroscience and coaching not only deepens my understanding but also inspires me to continually grow and refine my practice. I often grapple with self-doubt and the fear of not doing enough for my clients, but knowing that there are solid scientific principles behind our methods gives me confidence and hope. This article is a reminder that the work we do is meaningful and impactful, rooted in a profound understanding of the human mind and body. I'm eagerly looking forward to the next installment, and I feel grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow in this supportive community. Also, I'm grateful to have chosen to expand my knowledge and awareness pursuing a psychological degree after my coaching certification and credential. Knowing the theory is not as useless as we might think. While coaching is fundamentally about being and doing, how can we better integrate these crucial neuroscientific insights into our practice to elevate our effectiveness and impact? https://lnkd.in/dwRzk7xS

I am a curious human being, I love to learn new things. If something works, I want to get to the bottom of it: Why does it work, does it work for everyone, are there situations where it does not work, how can we apply the knowledge to new areas? Etc., etc., etc., One thing I love about being a coach is that I am never done with learning. Research on Coaching psychology is still a relatively new area and there is still a lot that can be discovered. The past 2 years I have coached over 100 people around stress management, resilience, purpose and meaning and from this experience I can say: Coaching does work! But empirical evidence is not enough (at least not for me!). We need research to understand the what, why and for whom, and recent years there has been a sustainable growth in this research area, also thanks to my peers at the UEL. These past days I was honored to be a small part of the ongoing research, both as a research participant and a peer reviewer for a journal article, can't wait to read both of these published! If you are wondering now if coaching works also for you, I have a few slots available for a free 30-minute exploration call for you to find out, link in comments.
