A new report from Synonym and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has analyzed opportunities that would enable the sector to deliver bioproducts economically for mass adoption and in the process, create a rich asset class for real estate investors. Chief amongst these is the development of biofoundries: large standardized fermentation facilities that offer the economies of scale to break the cost inertia currently facing the sector. “Synthetic biology promises, to paraphrase the old slogan, better living – better stuff – through biology,” commented Joshua Lachter, Synonym Co-founder. “Synonym imagines a world where these products are ubiquitous in our daily lives, and this report examines how that potential can translate to the realities of industrial production." “Our findings offer fascinating clarity on the pathway to non-pharma commercial biomanufacturing in the short term,” says Jean-Francois Bobier, Partner, Deep Tech, at the Boston Consulting Group and a lead author of the report. “While our figures appear conservative compared to some analyses, the biofoundry model detailed by Synonym offers a clear route primed for robust investment immediately.” #foodtech #biomanufacturing #bioproducts

Austrian precision fermentation dairy company Fermify has received self-affirmed GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status for its cell-cultured casein protein product in the United States. As a key protein that gives cheese its distinctive melting and stretching properties, developing cost-effective casein proteins could accelerate the advancement of animal-free dairy alternatives. Founded in 2021, Fermify previously raised $5 million in seed funding in May 2023 to develop its automated platform for producing dairy proteins through precision fermentation. The company also expanded its seed round with strategic investments from ingredients supplier Cremer and global food distributor Interfood in July 2023. Fermify's technology platform focuses on continuous precision fermentation processing rather than traditional batch fermentation, claiming up to 50% cost reductions and 16 times higher productivity compared to batch processing. These efficiency gains could help Fermify reach price parity with conventional casein by 2027. Moving forward, Fermify plans to collaborate with food manufacturers to incorporate its casein proteins into various dairy applications, including cheese, creams, and beverages. Additionally, Fermify has initiated the process with the US FDA to receive a "no questions" letter validating its safety assessment, which would further strengthen its position as one of two suppliers of precision fermentation casein proteins in the US market. Danish bioproduction company 21st.BIO has reached a significant milestone by achieving self-affirmed GRAS status in the US for its precision-fermented beta-lactoglobulin, BLG Essential+. This achievement opens the door for market entry of products containing the company's animal-free whey protein, marking a major step forward in the alternative protein industry. Founded in 2020, 21st.Bio leverages exclusive licensing of advanced expression technology from Novonesis, utilizing optimized filamentous fungus strains for efficient protein production. The company's Copenhagen pilot plant boasts an impressive 3,000-liter fermentation capacity, enabling rapid progression from initial development to regulatory approval in less than two years. Rather than producing its own products, 21st.Bio aims to offer its technology to partners for manufacturing and product development, positioning itself as an enabler in the precision fermentation ecosystem. In addition to beta-lactoglobulin, 21st.Bio is developing other dairy proteins, including caseins, as part of its expanding ingredient portfolio.
