China clearly anticipated a Trump victory and predicted it to mean a global power vacuum ahead after the 11/5 US elections... So on 11/4, the very day before the US elections, China's Renmin University established a brand new "School of Global Leadership". This will be China's first school of global leadership. It's a significant harbinger because among Chinese universities, Renmin Uni is often nick-named the ruling party CCP's "favorite son", because it was directly founded by the communist party going way back to 1937, so it enjoys an virtually unmatched relations with and political license from the party. And why create this school now? Renmin Uni's party secretary doesn't mince his words. He says the new school's purpose is to "meet the needs of the times and the needs of the world", by "contributing more Chinese wisdom and Chinese solutions to the globe's modernization effort". OK, even if after the election Pax Americana might be heading towards the ICU, but this timing? Come on, can China BE more insensitive? #ItsNotEvenColdYet #TooSoonMan.

"By the end of 2024, we will know whether democracy survives or dies" - Maria Ressa, Nobel Peace Prize winner of 2021 Why? ▷ 76 countries hold elections this year. ▷ Billions of citizens are expected to vote in 2024. ▷ Elections are set in major economies like the European Union, USA, India, and the UK. ▷ As well as 8 of the 10 most populous countries, including: Bangladesh, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Pakistan, Russia, and the USA. This means that the 1000s of Shapers in the Global Shapers Community are among the millions of young people about to cast a vote. We take this seriously. Because despite this surge in electoral activity, global democracy continues its 6 year decline – combined with the rapid evolution of AI, deep-fakes, and social media. You can count on this generation in standing up for democracy, transparency and accountability. #EUnite - Sources: International IDEA, European Commission

"Xi The Reformer" There was a curious but abortive attempt to cast Xi Jinping as a 'refomer' (改革家习近平/Xi Jinping The Reformer) in the lead up to the Third Plenum. There was a clear and deliberate attempt to play up his reformist credentials by state media. Was it a repair effort to de-emphasize comparisons to Mao? Was it a way to assuage domestic and international community that economic reforms will continue in spite of national security concerns? Probably both. Curiously, the articles have since been removed quite suddenly (edit: though still appearing on Xinhua newsfeed, h/t Zheng Wei, William). Was there overzealousness in comparing him to Deng? (Xi himself was somewhat ambivalent of and equivocated on the importance of Deng's reform and opening up). Perhaps there was a reckoning of the disconnect between economic reality with the state rhetoric of economic reform. Gave some comments to The Straits Times via Cheng Wei Aw on some tentative thoughts of the communique from the third plenum: "Assistant Professor Dylan Loh of Nanyang Technological University said Mr Xi has used the plenum to assure the Chinese that the ruling elite continues to strive for a balance between national security and development." https://lnkd.in/epMUrCjV

#Article Would Anura Dissanayake Be India’s Strategic Bet in Sri Lanka’s Presidential Race? writes Parag Gilada 1. Anura Dissanayake’s Political Shift: Anura Kumara Dissanayake, leader of the NPP and JVP alliance, is positioning himself as a “change-maker” for Sri Lanka in the upcoming 2024 presidential election, despite his party’s past radical Marxist leanings and opposition to the state. 2. India’s Strategic Interest: India is closely monitoring Sri Lanka’s election due to concerns over China’s growing influence in the country, particularly through investments in strategic assets like the Hambantota port. India’s engagement with Dissanayake could be part of its strategy to counterbalance China. 3. Challenges and Uncertainties: While Dissanayake leads in polls, he faces significant challenges, including opposition from veteran politicians and internal party dynamics. His party’s historical ties with China and its anti-India stance complicate his position, raising questions about his approach to international relations and domestic governance if elected.
