We expect a lot from our favorite food brands: exceptional taste, balanced nutrition, convenience, and an increasing commitment to reducing environmental impact. But what does that mean for your sauce product? Standing out in sauce innovation requires a holistic approach that integrates both product and packaging. Bold flavors and enhanced nutritional profiles can set your product apart, but minimizing packaging’s environmental impact is equally important, and challenging. Ultra-processed food (UPF). It's a loaded term. Are they unhealthy? (Well, usually.) Are they ever good? (Well, they can be, and even useful for food security, food safety and the environment.) Does everyone mean the same thing when using the term UPF? (No, we definitely do not and that is a problem considering UPFs are increasingly consumed even in LMIC. We need clarity so we can improve food environments.) Read Access to Nutrition Initiative's new discussion paper, "Classification of Processed Foods: Opportunities and Gaps." ATNI is committed to shaping markets so that the food industry develops and delivers products that promote health for all, while maintaining taste, safety, shelf-life, nutritional quality, and which can even be profitable. But to do this well, we need better alignment on classification systems of food processing and to have open discussions with policymakers, investors and the industry on this topic.
📣 ATNI Publishes Discussion Paper on Classification of Processed Foods: Opportunities and Gaps Today, we're excited to publish our Discussion Paper on the Classification of Processed Foods, now available on our website! 🌍 We are witnessing a global surge in ultra- or highly processed food consumption, driven by changes in product design, pricing, marketing, and distribution by F&B manufacturers, shifting lifestyles, and governmental policies, understanding the implications is paramount. Despite this trend, there remains a lack of consensus on how to classify foods based on processing levels. While the Nova classification system seems the most widely recognized framework, it has considerable limitations for practical application. 📈 Increased consumption of ultra- or highly processed food is associated with adverse health outcomes, but further research is needed to determine exact mechanisms. With growing scrutiny from policymakers and investors, there are new opportunities for food companies to reverse or re-engineer products so that the less processed versions still deliver the benefits but not the health risks of highly processed foods. 🤝 ATNI remains committed to staying at the forefront of these developments, closely monitoring emerging evidence and advancements in classification systems. This enables us to integrate the latest insights into our Indexes, empowering investors and policymakers to enable healthier food environments. Dive deeper into the discussion paper at the link below and follow us as we continue our journey to transform markets to enable healthy and sustainable diets for all: https://lnkd.in/eE4xsG37 #processedfoods #ultraprocessedfoods #UPF #nutrition #FoodandBeverage
