#climateadaptation: Recent findings from Oxfam have cast a spotlight on the reported figures of climate adaptation finance in Asia, with implications for the Asian Development Bank's (ADB) climate financing efforts. Oxfam's analysis suggests significant discrepancies in the reported numbers, raising questions about the accuracy and transparency of climate finance reporting. According to Oxfam's report, titled "Unaccountable Adaptation: The Asian Development Bank's overstated claims on climate adaptation finance," the ADB's actual finance numbers for major climate adaptation projects may be overstated by as much as 44%. In response to PTI queries, the ADB has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering USD 100 billion in climate financing by 2030, with a significant portion earmarked for adaptation and resilience efforts. This is such an under-reported story. New climate regs are well-intended, but likely to have a negative impact on smallholder farmers in developing countries. If we are going to have a just transition, donors, corporate buyers and investors need to work together to enable smallholders to transition to more climate-friendly ag practices.

Glad to hear that during COP29, WHO called for urgent integration of health into climate negotiations. WHO stressed the need to move beyond the siloed approach to addressing climate change and health, advocating for a people-centred approach to adaptation and resilience. Highlighting the strong link between the climate and health crises, WHO emphasises that prioritising health in climate strategies is both a moral and strategic necessity. #COP29 #Health #Climate

We need more funding and finance for agroecological food systems. Public climate finance should be contributing, but current levels are marginal (1.5%!). Rosinah Mbenya and I make the case for new funds for farmer organisations to support a shift to #agroecology, adapt to climate change, and implement solutions to phase out fossil fuels.

The 60th Sessions of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Subsidiary Bodies—SB60 (also called the 2024 Bonn Climate Change Conference) 3 to 13 June 2024 The High-Level Champions for Climate Action have recently set out an ambitious agenda for COP29 during the Bonn Climate Change Conference. Held in Bonn, Germany, this event focused on scaling up global efforts to address climate change, emphasizing the urgent need for greater action beyond current policies. Key issues on the agenda include climate finance, advancing progress on Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), timely submission of countries’ first Biennial Transparency Reports, work on National Adaptation Plans, and accelerating climate action through a just transition. One of the primary goals is to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels, a theme that has been underscored since COP28. This involves not only setting more ambitious emission reduction targets but also ensuring the effective and equitable implementation of the newly established loss and damage fund, which is designed to help vulnerable countries cope with the impacts of climate change​. The agenda also highlights the importance of inclusive engagement. Greater involvement of youth, Indigenous peoples, people living with disabilities, and frontline communities in the climate dialogue is crucial. These groups often bear the brunt of climate impacts, and their participation is essential for equitable and comprehensive climate action. Additionally, the agenda emphasizes the Global Stocktake process, a mechanism under the Paris Agreement for assessing collective progress towards climate goals. The Bonn conference serves as a key milestone in this process, offering an opportunity to review progress and prepare for the final political phase at COP29. This involves assessing gaps in current climate actions and enhancing support and finance for mitigation and adaptation efforts. Therefore, we all need to push for a zero-carbon, resilient world by fostering unprecedented collaboration among various stakeholders, including cities, businesses, regions, and investors. The call for urgent, collective action moves beyond mere pledges, advocating for concrete, actionable plans to address climate change's immediate and long-term threats. As the world prepares for COP29, the agenda set in Bonn serves as a crucial roadmap for each country for accelerating global efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate impacts, ensuring a sustainable and equitable future for all​. Leave no one behind (LNOB) is the central, transformative promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals but unequal access to WASH is still a challenge in the WASH sector. The 2022 report from the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) shows that inequalities in WASH were pronounced in the 21 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. 🌳 Central banks, regulators and supervisors are urged to intervene in main drivers of nature loss and climate change alongside governments WWF´s Greening Financial Regulation Initiative launches today its first Introductory deforestation and conversion Guide for central banks, financial regulators and supervisors. Deforestation and conversion of forests and other ecosystems are an important cause of nature and climate related risks that can lead to the collapse of entire financial systems. The sanitation sector and the funding landscape have changed since FSMA opened its doors. FSMA is closing in response to those changes. The Shift the Power movement and COVID-19 pandemic have altered donor priorities, directing more funding towards organisations working on the ground in low- and middle-income countries and away from those in high-income countries. Unfortunately, FSMA couldn't develop an independent sustainable financial model to support our ongoing operating and programme costs. Without secure funding, FSMA is forced to close as an organisation. As the landscape changes, we fully support the voices calling for direct investment in local organisations. FSMA is giving way to a future where donors prioritise support for local FSM networks and sanitation service providers. Responding to the COP29 climate finance agreement, in which rich countries agree to mobilize $300 billion a year to help Global South countries cope with warming temperatures and switch to renewable energy, Oxfam International’s Climate Change Policy Lead, Nafkote Dabi, said: “The terrible verdict from the Baku climate talks shows that rich countries view the Global South as ultimately expendable, like pawns on a chessboard. The $300 billion so-called ‘deal’ that poorer countries have been bullied into accepting is unserious and dangerous —a soulless triumph for the rich, but a genuine disaster for our planet and communities who are being flooded, starved, and displaced today by climate breakdown. And as for promises of future funding? They’re just as hollow as the deal itself. “The money on the table is not only a pittance in comparison to what’s really needed –it’s not even real “money”, by and large. Rather, it’s a motley mix of loans and privatized investment –a global Ponzi scheme that the private equity vultures and public relations people will now exploit. The destruction of our planet is avoidable, but not with this shabby and dishonorable deal.
