TODAY, 10 December, is International HUMAN RIGHTS DAY Rising geopolitical tensions, conflicts and crisis, violent extremism, climate change, growing inequalities, intolerance, exclusion, all have led to a dramatic increase of the number of women and girls seeing their human rights violated in the last years. If clearly dramatic in crisis contexts, with a 50% increase in sexual violence in conflicts, it affects all societies when 1 in 3 women still suffer physical violence, often at home. Belgium is a long standing ally of UN Women in adressing the UN Resolution 1325 on WOMEN, PEACE and SECURITY in times of War and Peace. It encompasses more women in security forces leadership, access to justice for victims of rape as a weapon of war, support for women mediators from community to peace negotiations, gender responsive peace agreements and more. In the context of Belgium’s term on the UN Human Rights Council, a high level Conference was organized on CHILDREN IN CRISIS with UNICEF Belgium and Plan International on 20.11.2024. The Opening by the Queen Mathilde of Belgium was a testimony of the country’s engagement. It was extremely inspiring to present UN Women’s lessons from our work with young women and girls in crisis settings and to share the panel on opportunities and good practices with the UN Special Representative of the Secretary General on Violence against Children, Mrs Najat Malala, colleagues and partners. Among the strategies identified to enhance GIRLS RIGHTS IN CONFLICTS is the centrality of amplifying their voices and participation in decision making and international conferences. This will also imply adjusting agendas and peace processes to their demands. 1wAs far as I know, a two weeks ago there was an International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. I think, it is very important to discuss this topic and to raise an awareness of the current situation on human rights, including women and children.
