EN PRIMEURS 2023 - CHÂTEAU CLINET RELEASE Located in the heart of the Pomerol appellation, Château Clinet and its famous gravel plots constitute one of the most beautiful references in Pomerol. This property on the right bank of Bordeaux was bought in 1999 by the Laborde family. A benchmark among the great Pomerol wines, Château Clinet watches over an exceptional vineyard of 9.8 hectares in production on a clay-gravel terroir. The vineyard is managed using sustainable agriculture. A mild winter gave way to a spring marked by an episode of frost without impact on a vineyard in the early vegetative stage. Then mild conditions, punctuated by some rain, favor rapid growth of the vines as well as rapid and early flowering. If summer begins with an alternation of sunny and rainy days, the heat peaks recorded at the end of August and the beginning of September ensure good ripening of the berries. The Valpolicella is a unique area that has Lake Garda on its western edge acting as a moderator of temperature; 11 valleys run north to south giving altitude to vineyards and creating distinct microclimates. It has all the important soil types of great wine regions: calcareous, glacial rocks mixed into clay and volcanic. The region’s native grapes, Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Molinara and Oseleta, have grown here for over a millennia and work in concert to tell the story of the terroir, even when dried via the appassimento method, the traditional technique of dehydrating grapes by up to 40%. When I finally paid attention, I saw nuance and differences based on terroir, not just process. [AWARDS 2024] pour Dom Brial The AOC Côtes du Roussillon Villages spans 1,741 hectares, primarily in the northern part of the Roussillon, and includes four specific villages identified for their unique terroir: Latour de France, Caramany, Lesquerde, and Tautavel. Soil types can be broken down as follows: Latour de France: Brown Schist; Caramany: Gneiss and Granite; Lesquerde: Granite (some of the most exciting Syrahs come from this village); and Tautavel: Red Clay and Limestone. All of these AOCs allow only red wines to be produced and the allowed varieties mirror that of the AOC Côtes du Roussillon. An exception being that Mourvèdre is not allowed under the AOC Côtes du Roussillon Villages Caramany and AOC Côtes du Roussillon Villages Lesquerde.

We're not literally talking about wines made from grapes grown on the sides of volcanoes - although we'll absolutely be tasting some of these! Did you know that, in many parts of the wine world, vines grow on soils formed from the weathering of volcanic rocks, otherwise known as “extrusive igneous” rocks? According to the Wine Enthusiast "basaltic terroirs make up a significant portion of global volcanic terroirs." Regions with basaltic terroirs include Mount Etna, the Willamette Valley, the Canary Islands, Soave Classico and Australia’s Yarra Valley. Elsewhere volcanic terroirs are found in Tenerife, the Azores, Languedoc, Napa and Sonoma valleys, Campania, Alsace, Tokaj and Santorini. Benjamin Spencer, winemaker and author of The New Wines of Mount Etna, believes that volcanic soils can contribute an “exciting tension, edginess and savory quality” to the wines they produce. We'll taste a range of these wines to explore whether the concentration in acidity and mineral compounds found in volcanic soils does indeed produce wines with extra fruit purity, elegance, suppleness and a mouth watering finish.
