Are software-defined #ADAS sensors a realistic prospect for the automotive industry? indie’s Chet Babla dives into this topic with other industry experts in The Ojo-Yoshida Report. While updating perception algorithms over-the-air post vehicle sale can in theory extend the capabilities of deployed ADAS hardware, it is not a given that a software-only upgrade can always refresh an ADAS system’s ability to comply with evolving regulation, even if sensor fusion of camera and radar, for example, is leveraged. The recent National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA Automatic Emergency Braking (#AEB) mandate, including its challenging nighttime Pedestrian AEB (PAEB) requirement, is a case in point. Low-light camera vision processing performance depends heavily upon the deployed imaging sensor, color filter array (#CFA) and image signal processing (ISP) capability. Software upgrades alone are unlikely to address the limitations of deficient hardware for nighttime PAEB.
