🌍 Reflections on the 13th African Internet Governance Forum 🌐 From November 20 to 22, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in 13th African Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF) held at the iconic Africa Hall of UNECA. This enriching experience brought together Honorable Members of Parliament, civil society leaders, and private sector representatives to discuss critical issues shaping the future of internet governance in Africa. The opening speech by Honorable Dr. Negere Lencho set the tone by emphasizing digital device inclusivity and internet affordability for all, a vision crucial for Africa’s digital transformation. Honorable Adil Suleman shed light on the transformative power of AI for socio-economic development and the need for continental AI strategies to unleash its full potential. The discussions touched on pressing topics, including: • Data protection laws and combating cybercrime. • Strategies for AI governance and collaborative legislation. • Challenges posed by internet shutdowns during protests and elections, with a clear message that such shutdowns are unjustifiable. • Policies to safeguard an open and accessible internet. Honorable Shuaib Afolabt Salisu offered valuable insights on tracking progress and ensuring technology integration aligns with intercontinental benefits. Mr. Guy Berger highlighted a vital principle: "No African Data, No African AI", stressing the importance of viewing data as a public good. The forum concluded with a call to action: 📊 Build robust data infrastructures and data centers. 📣 Open more spaces for public consultation on digital policies. ⚖️ Reevaluate laws that hinder internet access to strike the right balance. I am deeply grateful to the organizers UNECA, AU Commission, AfIGF Secretariat, and all partners, for their efforts in creating such a transformative platform. Representing the Internet Society at this forum was an honor, and I felt privileged to connect with so many inspiring individuals committed to Africa’s digital future. I sincerely hope that the meaningful discussions held during the forum will translate into actionable steps and policies that benefit everyone across the continent. The AfIGF reinforced my belief in Africa’s potential to lead in shaping inclusive, secure, and forward-thinking digital policies. Together, we can build a future where technology empowers every African. #AfIGF2024 #InternetGovernance #CyberSecurity #DigitalInclusion #AIforAfrica
