I find it interesting that we say that space is the last frontier. Implying that we understand our own world. The more I learn about the Earth and it's mechanics the more I realize how little we know. Sure, it's true to say that we also don't know what's in the deepest sea trenches but what's more amazing is that we don't know what's under our feet even two inches into the soil profile. There are an estimated 13.2 million fungi and only 2% of those have been discovered and studied. If just one of those gives us penicillin then what other discoveries are waiting out there. In our ignorance we can at least preserve what we don't know by literally and metaphorically treading lightly upon the Earth. The soil health principles discussed here are the blueprints to doing just that.

NEW BLOG POST: A recent review paper has put the spotlight on plantain and its ability to mitigate nitrogen leaching from pasture systems. With plantain being referred to as a key method for reducing the environmental impact of N loss on farms, this review has understandably created a lot of questions and uncertainty in the farming sector. What were the key conclusions of the recent review paper that turned our understanding of plantain on its head? What has been the response by others in the New Zealand science community? Where to now for plantain in New Zealand? We explain this all in our latest blog post https://lnkd.in/gE9qhhTR

An excellent step towards helping farmers, understand and adapt their farm's climate impacts. Having two different answer can be useful, when you can demonstrate, and justify, how you have arrived at different results. I hope collaboration supports the discourse of how to accurately holistically measure, varied and diverse, farm enterprises.

Our 2024/25 protocol is here. The protocol is the document that guides what we measure, and how we measure it. Over 6 months, we integrated feedback from: Over 500 farmers NGOs including WWF-UK and National Trust The Exchange Farmer Advisory board The Exchange Science Advisory board The result is an upgraded methodology that includes vital new metrics like Soil Cover %, Food Production and Nutrient Balances. Plus improvements to how we measure many of the metrics across all our 6 impact areas of soil health, carbon, biodiversity, animal welfare , water and social. Our top priority was developing a protocol that truly benefits farmers. The metrics we use must help farmers access financial rewards, make practical improvements, and be straightforward to implement. The aim being to ensure Exchange is accessible to all farmers, regardless of their type or scale of operation. Check it out at https://lnkd.in/e8pqExbJ The protocol is an ever evolving project - so let us know what you think at [email protected] Huge thanks to Dr Abigail Barker for her dedication in leading the creation of this protocol. Excited! Our ABC project (Agriculture Building Carbon) has been approved by Interreg Europe. In the coming 4 years we (Provincie Gelderland) will be the lead partner in developing policy instruments to promote carbon sequestration in agriculture crops, which can be used in the building sector and biobased products. We will implement this project together with 10 partners (mainly regions) from 8 different countries. We will get technical support from Climate Cleanup . Sven Jense Nina Holman Wietse W. Hermanns
