🦀 The Rust Foundation's 2nd bad draft trademark policy "tl;dr: The Rust Foundation’s new trademark policy still forbids unapproved modifications: this would forbid both the Rust Community’s own development work(!) and normal Free Software distribution practices" https://buff.ly/3YUuPd3 #rust #opensource #trademark

In this clip, Michael Dolan, SVP and GM of Projects at the The Linux Foundation Foundation, discusses the recent shifts in the open source community, highlighting the challenges posed by changes in licensing for open source projects. He notes that some organizations are altering licenses to boost revenue and valuation, which can disrupt dependencies and contributions. Dolan emphasizes the need for clear licensing from the outset and the rapid response of the developer community in cases of such license changes.

As a Linux user since 1996 and Open Source enthusiast, I support these arguments. But as said in this video, no matter if companies close the code. There will always be a fork and a new group of cool devs keeping the code open and free. What these big techs are doing is creating more dissatisfaction of the community to them. Most of the big applications today run under Open Source and no matter the money and the greed of these companies, freedom is always stronger than money.

If you run a #WordPress powered site but are wondering, given this whole mess, if that's still a good choice, we should chat! I've worked with WP for more than a decade and know it super well — including what's involved in migrating onto newer, better systems. For example, sites made with Sanity + Astro/Next.js are often better for end user performance (which is good for SEO), more secure, better tailored to your needs because the CMS is fully customizable, and easier to operate. (And, as a bonus, no news feed forcibly injected into your dashboard!) Not ready to move off of WP? I can still help with security and performance audits, not to mention turning off news feeds and other ways that certain people can push unhinged rants into your team's dashboard. Wanna explore your options? My DMs are open, or email me at [email protected]
God help me, I wrote down my take on the WP Engine debacle and I think I deserve a donut for bringing it in under 2,000 words: https://lnkd.in/e8KUcbPq As part of writing this, I looked at the GPL, the WP Foundation's trademark policy, and any other docs I can find to see whether WP Engine (or any third party) is obligated to pay for the use of the Latin letters "W" and "P" in their name, and came up empty. I'm hopeful this is just a passing freakout, but worried that this reflects a shift in how tech companies and founders view their open source programs and whether any other tech I rely upon is subject to one dude getting angry at some other dudes.
