A fantastic and challenging start to #ISBE2024 Prof Sue Marlowe talking about how far the #entrepreneurship discipline and community has come, and talking about where the focus needs to be going forwards. Going forwards she urges the Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ISBE) audience to: challenge individualism and individual responsibility and to think more about collective development, how we change the environment to be more supportive and...making sure we do no harm. A great opening to the conference...the theme of which is: Research, policy and practice for a more equitable world. Looking forward to presenting two papers today that link to the theme, one about the impacts of #cooperative businesses and one about #hopepunk entrepreneurship and its implications for #EntEd :). There is a commitment from the new government to double the size of the #coop economy and coops are business formations which are structured democratically and organised for equitable rewards... and therefore they are a living example of how business and entrepreneurship contributes to a more equitable world...

On October 29-30, the 14th European Congress of Small and Medium Enterprises, the largest event in Europe dedicated to SMEs, will take place. I’ll be participating in the formal inauguration of the event and in an introductory panel focused on the perspectives and experiences of entrepreneurs. The topic will center on how to act in the present to effectively shape a future in which business representatives have a strong voice. “Europe has as many start-ups as the US, but they have a much tougher time growing, Vincent Collen points out in Les Echos.” Since 2015, I’ve been working to raise awareness of this challenge—starting with one-on-one meetings and expanding to LSG2G meetups, a quarterly forum, and an online show to give VCs and founders a larger platform to push for change in Europe’s investment landscape and connect players in the global innovation ecosystem. Over time, it became clear this isn’t just about funding; it’s a systemic issue. Europe’s regulatory environment has become increasingly hostile to both investors and entrepreneurs, creating hurdles rather than support. An article in MoneyWeek highlights the scale of this problem. Why is this so critical? Bureaucratic barriers, restrictive regulations, and limited capital are driving a steady exodus of talent and investment toward the US, SE Asia, and the Middle East. This brain drain leads to fewer tax revenues, weaker economic growth, and diminished influence on the global stage. This trend began over 20 years ago, but it’s promising to see EU and UK policymakers finally recognizing the urgency.
