The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) has awarded contracts to Anduril Industries, L3Harris Technologies, and Swarm Aero to develop prototype software for managing massive drone swarms under the Replicator rapid-production initiative. This effort, part of the Autonomous Collaborative Teaming (ACT) program, focuses on automating coordination across uncrewed systems in multiple domains. Aditi Kumar, DIU's deputy director for strategy, emphasized the need for open, government-owned software architectures that can integrate with various hardware systems, ensuring adaptability and scalability. Anduril’s Lattice platform has already proven its capabilities in real-world tests, enabling seamless integration of uncrewed systems and data for faster threat detection and mission execution. The Replicator initiative also includes Opportunistic, Resilient & Innovative Expeditionary Network Topology (ORIENT) awards to bolster drone communications in contested electromagnetic environments. These efforts align with the Defense Department’s strategy to deter Chinese military action in the Pacific, leveraging lessons from Ukraine’s maritime drone successes in the Black Sea. Adm.
