Art History Bites: Klimt’s Role in Vienna Secession “In the 1890s, artists, designers, and architects across Europe rebelled against the enduring dominance of art standards from centuries past. Attempts to emulate the old masters gave way to abstraction, experimentation, and individual expression—with regional variations: France saw the birth of Art Nouveau; Germany, the Jugendstil; and in Austria, there were the Vienna Secessionists. …United under painter Gustav Klimt, Viennese artists who did not agree with the tastes of the art establishment broke away from the Kunstlerhaus to found their own society in 1896, which took after the so-called Secession movements that had previously taken place in Munich and Berlin. Their break with the Kunstlerhaus was cemented when, in 1897, the institution’s leaders opted to censure the Secessionists, crushing any chance of reconciliation between the two groups. Not only is the Vienna Secession much less well known than other turn of the century art movements like Jugendstil or Art Nouveau, but notable members of the Secession, including Klimt, are often talked about in isolation from the societal currents in which they swam. One reason for this neglect is the Secession’s lack of a style or ideas that tied the work of its members together. Interestingly, though, this lack of programming was precisely what the movement was all about… Because the group would leave an outsized footprint in styles including Art Nouveau and Expressionism in Austria, the latter prominently led by artists including Egon Schiele (a Klimt protege) and Oskar Kokoschka, who were associated with the group in its later years. The Vienna Workshop, which closed after the stock market crash of 1929, would further shape movements from Bauhaus to Art Deco.” https://lnkd.in/dNeEcFrj FROM our group, “Art Museums and Art Galleries: News, Reviews and Collections” ( https://lnkd.in/dweM6GQ ). If you've watched any of the Olympics, you've surely seen the Eiffel Tower onscreen. Did you know that it was built for the 1889 World Exhibition and that vocal artists and architects opposed its construction, many sheerly because they didn't want to look at it? Some made public apologies after it was built. https://lnkd.in/eVbJcpZh Are people predisposed to believe any new project will distract from what exists? Something to think about next time you speak out against housing, public works, or other construction. Or if you sit on a dais weighing such feedback.

"According to the exhibition, many Brutalist buildings “face widespread public aversion” and are dubbed as “ugly” structures globally. However, there is simultaneously a growing recognition of their cultural value, sparking preservation efforts. In fact, the exhibition explores the options these structures are left with, be it renovation or demolition, and the challenges accompanying these decisions." Brutalism enthusiasts and critics alike should visit our latest exhibition, Capital Brutalism! Learn more about it in this article from Arch Daily.

New exhibition design by FACTORY! When does the past end and the present begin, and what exists in the in-between? The nature of time is often explored through the lens of both permanence and transience. How does the fluidity of memory, which is deeply subjective, shape the process of art-making? If there might be an aesthetic that expresses the complex relationship between loss, time, and solitude, how would it look like? What visual or conceptual elements would it involve? An Ode to Absence is an exhibition that explores these questions. By considering the notions of “lack” and “longing,” the exhibition delves into how these themes can articulate the nuances of temporal experience and the conceptual weight of absence. Featuring works drawn from private art collections, An Ode to Absence is an exercise of a curatorial methodology that seeks to create connections between seemingly disparate pieces to reveal underlying themes that might otherwise remain obscured. Through this process, the curatorial approach transforms individual pieces into a narrative that invites viewers to contemplate the time as an interplay between presence and absence, and the dimensions of the ephemeral and the enduring. Curated by Michelle Ho Exhibition opens from 23/9 till 22/11/24 ADM Gallery, 81 Nanyang Drive, Singapore 637458 Monday - Friday, 10-5pm, Saturday open by appointments. Closed on Sunday, Public Holidays and term breaks.

I was just going through the inspiring ETH Zürich's newsletter and read about the ongoing exhibitions when I stumbled upon one dedicated to the newly inaugurated Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw (MSN) in Warsaw. The topic of the exhibition resonated with some of my thoughts about the erasure of memory and the replacing of places of social attraction, related to the ordinary life of people with monuments, landmarks and "fabricated signs". I was thinking "What if a museum of modern art, a music center or any contemporary "high culture" landmark can co-exist peacefully with places of ordinary everyday life? I think it can. How is a problem which public authorities, urban planners and architects should answer specifically for every unique occasion. The hardest, I believe, is to convince them it is possible and that no, it won't hurt the city or its citizens and visitors alike. What do you think about it? Do you have opinion about the topic and can you point both positive and not-so-positive examples of such co-existence? https://lnkd.in/dmTSJK3P https://lnkd.in/dbbQF6pi

A Snapshot of the German Art Market Germany has long been one of Europe’s most influential art markets, driven by a blend of cultural history, contemporary innovation, and strong public support. With major hubs in Berlin, Munich, and Cologne, Germany attracts global collectors, art fairs, and cutting-edge galleries that promote both established and emerging artists. Here are key trends shaping the market: Contemporary and Digital Art Growth: While German collectors traditionally favored classic and modern art, there’s growing interest in contemporary, digital, and NFT-based works, as younger collectors engage with more diverse media. Resilient Art Fairs and Galleries: Renowned fairs like Art Cologne and Gallery Weekend Berlin continue to attract international crowds, creating vital platforms for German galleries and artists. The German government’s strong cultural funding support has also helped galleries weather economic challenges. Sustainability and Social Impact: The German art market is increasingly emphasizing sustainability and social awareness, with artists and collectors aligning with eco-conscious practices. Galleries and fairs are adapting to these values, integrating environmentally responsible practices in exhibitions and art production. Accessible Collecting: Initiatives like art financing and partnerships with public museums are making art more accessible to a broader audience. Emerging collectors can engage with the art market through alternative channels, fostering a more inclusive landscape. Germany’s art market remains vibrant, embracing new forms while preserving its rich cultural legacy. For artists, collectors, and industry professionals, Germany continues to offer a unique blend of tradition and forward-thinking innovation. #ArtMarket #Germany #ContemporaryArt #Sustainability #ArtCollectors #Innovation #ArtGallery

🗿 What is a masterpiece? ⛱️ A 'masterpiece' is something different for everyone! Maybe 'masterpiece' to you means something that has a practical use above all, rather than artistic or historical value. Or maybe your masterpiece is not rare at all, but just something you find in countless living rooms. The Museum aan de Stroom in Antwerp is always inspirational! Currently, they show an exhibition where Antwerp residents chose their personal masterpieces. For 'Eyecatchers', 16 Antwerp residents went in search of their masterpieces in the MAS collection. Unique, important, unseen or pioneering? Or useful, fascinating, recognizable or endearing? Here I show one, which made me think…. 🔥 Intriguing lighters 🔥 'Human creativity has always fascinated me. Where do ideas come from? How much ingenuity and imagination is needed to make an idea real and tangible? We often don't think about that when we look at a utensil. These lighters fascinate me for the same reason. They are inventive and amusing. In whose head did they originate?' https://lnkd.in/dS94k69b
