There's been a lot of ink spilled about the importance of sales and marketing alignment. And as someone who has spent most of my career leading and aligning Go To Market teams, I can sing that song all day. But one area that I don't think gets enough attention is the need to drive alignment between Product and Marketing teams. In my experience, no combination can do more to drive momentum in a SaaS business than a well aligned product and marketing org. When I look back at the moments where the companies that I was a part of were performing at our highest level, those were also the moments when product and marketing started to truly feel like one team. In those moments, we were shipping high impact product releases more consistently and everything we were doing in marketing felt like it had more impact. These were also the moments when sales pipeline was cranking and inbound interest was at its highest. (Shoutout Fernando Mattos and Keshav Vasudevan - we had some fun in those days.) On the flipside, the moments where there was the highest levels of frustration and it felt like we were swimming against the current, were the times when product and marketing weren't aligned and when trust across these teams was low. This goes beyond just checking the box and hiring a great product marketer. That will 100% help. But if there isn't a commitment from leaders on both product and marketing to actually get on the same page and build trust, then that person is going to get fed up and won't last long. Take product and marketing alignment seriously. It will make your marketing team better at their jobs. It will help your product team move faster and make sure they are focused on the right stuff. And it will make your customers and business more successful.

Much like fitness, health, and relationships that matter, you’ve got to play the long game in B2B marketing. When I took over marketing at Funnel (after a short, unsuccessful stint as a salesperson) I was very deliberate about long-term gains over short-term symbolic wins. Our (incredible) team focused on building valuable resources and giving them away for free. Trying new tactics and taking risks. Doing events that shake up the status quo. Creating an entirely new software category and changing how we sell. Remaining fun and approachable as a brand. This journey isn’t for everyone--you don't get the empty kudos of a quick win, and it requires faith from leadership and colleagues. But you do get long term sustainable successes. Many companies big and small are hurting, pulling back marketing spend, or laying people off. ...but we're picking up momentum as a result of our “build it and they will come approach.” PS. When hiring a marketing agency, here are a few things you need to have a deep understanding of when vetting a potential partner: Finding an agency is EASY finding a great agency is HARD. 1. WHO will you actually be working with? Oftentimes in the sales process, you'll talk to the smartest or one of the smartest people or people within the company. This can be an indicator of the quality, but one of the biggest complaints I hear from brands is that they went from an A-level talent in the sales process to a very junior-level talent or intern. 2. If you do find out you're assigned to someone with less experience, this isn't a reason to say no immediately. When this happens you need to make sure the agency has amazing SYSTEMS and PROCESSES in place and that you understand and believe in those. Here's a real-world example: Brock Purdy is an AMAZING QB for the San Francisco 49ers and he's proven that. However, he was very "junior-level" on paper when he began starting (he was a rookie and the last pick in the draft). But he was plugged into an amazing system and has thrived. The same can be true when hiring an agency. 3. Regardless of your situation above, I'd ALWAYS ask to talk to some current clients. They don't have an incentive to sell you on the agency so you'll get it straight from them. Hope this helps!

As a marketing leader, I’m often asked what would be at the “top of my list” after jumping into a new role, opportunity, and/or company. This comes up both formally in a professional context, but also sitting on the couch over drinks and candid conversations. Obviously, it can vary by specific team, company size, industry, trends, etc. Overall though, across all of the above, here would be my Top 3 things on my radar if starting that new gig today: 👂🏻 1) Listen, listen, and listen some more. 👂🏻 Listen to team members, executives, interns, new customers, old customers, ex-customers, contractors, partners, and market feedback. And then do more listening. And more listening tomorrow. And never stop listening. How can you make an informed decision without having a pulse and know where the team has been already? Actions should be dictated by insights, information, cues, reading between the lines, and taking calculated risks after listening, IMHO. Listening to Speaking ratio of at least 2:1. 🦈 2) Do a marketing deep dive. 🦈 Take stock of the valuable talent, technology, and knowledge you *already* available today. Since you’ve invested time listening, you can hopefully help position folks at the intersection of needs (individual, team, company) and genuine employee interests. Swim with each person and squad, and examine strategy and tactics. Examples: Brand - consistent delivery, transparency Content - repurposing webinars, entertainment value Creative - brand kit, repositories Community - expertise, feedback loops Demand Gen - organic posts, referrals Events - live updates, partnerships Hiring - pay equality, accurate descriptions Ops - request form, double opt-ins Sales Enablement - before & afters, experience focus And no, I would definitely NOT change the website just to make a splash in the first 90 days! 😂 🎯 3) Detach, observe, and make a call. 🎯 Studying the Navy Seals, they coach on using this strategy to help prevent freezing up during intense, critical situations. Also, not all decisions will be right, but each one will provide additional information for more accurate future decisions. So, I would take in as much guidance as possible, and make decisions based on those cues. And constantly try to improve on being an effective decision-maker that can walk and chew gum at the same time. Folks far smarter than me figured out it’s much better to make a decision and keep moving forward than get stuck in an analysis paralysis pattern. ====== Ultimately, marketing’s “job” is to be the best possible storyteller, acting as a pseudo media company in the process. This move generates leads, which turn into customers, which generate revenue, and help crank up this flywheel. The more I can be a servant leader and support my team, the happier they’ll become, and the healthier the bottom-line will become tomorrow and over the long-term. #Marketing #Leadership #DayOne
