EIA congratulates the European Parliament for rejecting numerous destructive amendments from conservative group EPP to the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which would have sabotaged it beyond recognition. However, we are disappointed that they have accepted a 12 month delay to its entry into force. This ground-breaking legislation will prohibit the trade in beef, leather, chocolate, soy, palm oil, and coffee linked to deforestation to and from the EU market. It is needed more than ever to prevent devastating biodiversity loss and climate change as well as the violation of human rights. Ancient forests are being destroyed at a terrifying rate – we need to act now, not wait another year. What is EUDR? • The European Union Deforestation-free Regulation (EUDR) is an initiative by the European Union aimed at stopping products that cause deforestation from being sold in the EU. • Companies must ensure their products are not sourced from land that was deforested or degraded after December 31, 2020. • Products must comply with the legislation of the production country, including environmental laws and human rights. Why It’s Being Introduced? • The main cause of deforestation is the expanding agricultural land needed for products like soy, beef, palm oil, wood, rubber, cocoa, and coffee. • Since the EU imports many of these products, it has a responsibility to help reduce global deforestation. • The EUDR seeks to protect forests, preserve biodiversity, and combat climate change. #EUDR

🌳⚠️Tomorrow, EU ambassadors will discuss the European Commission’s proposal to delay the EU deforestation-free products regulation (#EUDR). With 224 other civil society organisations, we’re calling on national EU governments and the European Parliament to reject the Commission’s proposal. European production and consumption of products like beef, leather, palm oil, coffee, cocoa, timber, and soy are driving deforestation, forest degradation and human rights violation. The EUDR is a world-first in the fight for deforestation-free products. By delaying it, the European Commission is: 👉 undermining the EU’s credibility as a global leader in the fight against climate change, biodiversity loss and human rights violations 👉 effectively rewarding those companies who are continuing to profit from environmental destruction 👉 penalising those who have already spent resources to comply with the EUDR 👉 weakening the overall integrity of EU policy-making 👉 putting the European Green Deal into question 👉 sending the message to other countries that regulatory measures on deforestation can wait Forests are key to a livable future. They must be protected. Read the full #Together4Forests statement here: https://lnkd.in/etSSi_ZE

GOOD NEWS: EU Rejects Attempts to Water Down Deforestation Law The EU's decision to reject attempts to weaken the Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is a significant victory for our forests and our planet. Recently, led by conservative members, the European Parliament voted to introduce loopholes to the EUDR. Thankfully, EU governments rejected these efforts. The regulation will now require companies to ensure their products—like soy, beef, palm oil, cocoa, and coffee—are deforestation-free. This is a major step toward cleaning up global supply chains and protecting vital ecosystems. However, there's a downside: the implementation of the EUDR has been delayed by one year, giving companies until the end of 2025 to comply. This delay is concerning because every moment counts in our fight against deforestation. We need to work effectively to prevent any further delays and push for full enforcement as soon as possible. When I was an MEP we were advocating for the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR), the precursor to today's deforestation law. Back then, the European Parliament supported the EUTR, but EU governments were blocking it due to fears of administrative burden. I took it upon myself to lobby EU governments one by one, explaining how the regulation wouldn't overwhelm their systems and highlighting its importance in combating illegal logging. After much effort, we succeeded in passing the EUTR, setting the stage for the current EUDR. The EUDR builds on that foundation and has the potential to make a significant impact if implemented properly. But our work doesn't stop here. Countries worldwide that contribute to global deforestation through their demand for these products must follow the EU's lead and enact similar laws. Together, we can create a future where forests are preserved, not destroyed and people on the ground do not have to put their lives at risk to protect these commons. Let's celebrate this victory and remain vigilant to ensure swift and full implementation. The fight for our planet continues, and every action counts. #Deforestation #EUDeforestationRegulation #ForestsMatter #Biodiversity #SustainableSupplyChains #EnvironmentalJustice #GlobalAction #RegenerativeFuture #NatureProtection #TimberRegulation #ForestConservation #PolicyForChange #EarthRegeneration 📸: https://lnkd.in/dp4qyhgK

🌿🌏With deforestation impacting climate, biodiversity, and communities, agricultural production drives almost 90% of forest loss worldwide. The EU is the second-largest importer of deforestation-linked goods, responsible for 13-16% of this impact. On October 2nd, the EU delayed its Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) by a year, adding complexity to its Green Deal goals. In her article “The European Deforestation Regulation and EU’s Normative Power: Shaping Global Trade for Sustainability”, Ana Sánchez Antelo delves into how this regulation could reshape trade, especially for producer countries in the Global South, and the challenges of fair implementation. 🔗 Read Ana’s full article on European Waves: https://lnkd.in/e7fTmCBS #EuropeanWaves #EuropeanGreenDeal #DeforestationRegulation #SustainableTrade #ClimateAction

🚨 Hands off the #EU Deforestation Regulation!🚨 We've joined 225 civil society organisations from over 40 countries to issue a joint statement calling on all national EU governments and the European Parliament to reject the European Commission’s proposal to delay this landmark law. The EUDR is the flagship achievement of the European Green Deal. It is a world first in the fight against deforestation, forest degradation and associated human rights impacts, which are driven by European production and consumption of products like beef, leather, palm oil, coffee, cocoa, timber, rubber, and soy. The world’s forests urgently need the protection that the EUDR offers. By delaying its application and giving into the demands of vested interests, EU lawmakers are effectively rewarding those companies who are continuing to profit from environmental destruction. The impact of a delay would have huge implications for the climate ⬇️ 🌡️ An extra 49 megatonnes of greenhouse gas emissions could be released. 🚗 Which would be the same as annual emissions from 18 million cars. 📢 To the members of the European Parliament and national EU governments: reject the European Commission’s proposal to delay the EUDR! 🇪🇺 European industry associations and producers have appealed to the European Commission to postpone the implementation of the #EU #Deforestation Regulation (#EUDR). The signatories support the regulation’s goal to combat deforestation and forest degradation to protect the climate, biodiversity, and ensure sustainable supply chains. However, they emphasize the lack of clear guidelines and necessary tools for compliance, with less than 100 days remaining until the regulation comes into effect. This creates legal and market uncertainties that could lead to the bankruptcy of small businesses and job losses in rural areas. Industry associations warn that implementing the EUDR within the planned timeline could cause significant market disruptions and severely impact European producers. The European Commission just proposed a 12-month delay for the implementation of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). 🌳 If approved by the European Parliament and the Council, it would make the law applicable on 30 December 2025 for large companies and 30 June 2026 for micro- and small enterprises. At a time when deforestation must be urgently addressed, this decision raises significant doubts about the Commission President's commitment to delivering on the EU's environmental promises. It's important to remember that this decision: 🏢Unfairly penalizes companies that have already made significant investments to comply with the EUDR, while rewarding those who’ve fallen behind. 🌍Disregards the voices of 1.2 million Europeans demanding bold action to stop deforestation fueled by EU consumption. 🌿 Undermines one of the key achievements of the European Green Deal. Let’s recall that in 2017, the EU was responsible for 16% of global deforestation through its imports. This unfortunate reality places it second on the list of tropical forest destroyers, just behind China, but ahead of India and the United States. Companies, governments and citizens must join forces to stop deforestation around the globe, and they have to act NOW. #TogetherPossible More information about the EUDR here : FR: https://lnkd.in/eYnJrVHq NL: https://lnkd.in/e7QtVbKU

Time is running out! The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) will soon be mandatory for most companies, starting from December 30th, 2024. This regulation applies to any entity that places relevant commodities or products on the EU market or exports them from it. As part of the Fedrigoni Group, we must demonstrate that our products are deforestation-free and not linked to forest degradation, especially in the case of products made from materials originated from wood, such as pulp and face paper. This law was enacted in response to the urgent environmental challenges caused by deforestation for agriculture and forest degradation, which contribute to climate change and biodiversity loss.
