As a general rule, I avoid participating in online discussions driven by fear. I don't share news about the latest data breaches to alarm or shame anyone into prioritizing cybersecurity. However, I came across an article this morning about T-Mobile's recent settlement with the FCC. It's disheartening but true that many organizations either completely overlook cybersecurity (Ignorance is Bliss) or merely tick compliance boxes (it won't happen to us, so we'll do the bare minimum) until something goes wrong. When that happens, it's common to see a CISO get fired or a sudden surge in budget allocation. Both reactions are extremely frustrating. The T-Mobile settlement amounts to $31.5 million. Imagine if T-Mobile had allocated just 1% of that—$315,000—annually for cybersecurity over the past decade. There's a lot that can be accomplished with $315,000 a year. Could the issue have still occurred? Possibly. But with a more proactive approach to cybersecurity, they might have detected the problem earlier, responded more swiftly, experienced less turnover, and retained more clients.
