What a week we had. I most certainly had some highs and lows. But, the good surely outweighed the not so good. Unfortunately, I slipped up and did not take a ton of pictures. But, know that I was fully present and engaged. Here are a few things I’ve pondered over the last few days ✅ What does success look like? I’ve been challenged more these last few weeks to really define what this looks like for me. Given that EVERYHTING is different post-COVID(ish), I am learning to be okay with reimagining what this means to me. ✅ How can I connect with students differently? I’ve been challenging myself to move beyond simply believing that students should respond to me. Rather, I want to respond to them. I also want to continue to learn how to create meaningful and rich experiences for students. ✅ How do I build connections? It is true that it takes a village. In the end, everyone at the university is here for student success. But sometimes this can get lost in all the things that happen. I want to always be collaborative, open, and respectful. As an alumna of the University of Leeds, I have had the privilege of participating in the Alumni Leadership Mentoring Programme (ALMP) since 2022. Each year, this journey introduces me to remarkable individuals, and this year is no exception. I recently had my first session with my mentee, Micaela Addison Kemp, a final-year BA Asia Pacific Studies student. Her story deeply resonated with me. She’s the first in her family to attend university, an achievement she attributes to her mother, a single mom who inspired her to break barriers. In Micaela’s words, her mother encouraged her education so that “they won’t hold it against you.” Micaela’s story is one of resilience, determination, and the power of opportunity. She was able to pursue her undergraduate degree through a programme for disadvantaged students—a testament to how the right environment can transform lives. This has made me reflect on the profound influence our environment has on shaping who we become. Whether it is our families, communities, or opportunities we encounter, the environment molds us in ways we often don’t realise. For children, a loving, supportive home fosters exploration and learning. Yet, in single-parent households, the challenges of balancing emotional and economic pressures are immense —something I can personally vouch for, having been one for more than 10 years. Despite these challenges, stories like Micaela’s remind us of the vital role mentorship and support networks play in creating those nurturing environments. Mentoring has taught me that it’s not just about guiding—it’s about learning together. Each conversation brings fresh perspectives and inspiration, enriching my understanding of the world. To my fellow alumni: if you haven’t yet, I encourage you to join initiatives like the ALMP. You’ll discover that in giving, you truly receive.
