I had the privilege of participating as a speaker in a recent webinar in #SouthAfrica focused on the topic of 'Lessons from Australia: Integrating high levels of renewable energy on the grid'. The webinar was hosted by EE Business Intelligence and POWER FUTURES LAB at University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business, and was supported by Investec Bank, GET.transform, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, South African-German Energy Programme (SAGEN), and the South African Independent Power Producer Association (SAIPPA). For those interested, the webinar can be viewed here: https://lnkd.in/gHur9MGU
During the webinar, I learnt that the energy crisis in South Africa has led to a significant increase in the adoption of #rooftopsolar energy. Recent data from Eskom indicates a 453% surge in rooftop solar installations over the span of 2 years, from less than 1GW in April 2022 to nearly 5.5GW by February 2024. This surge presents a mix of challenges and opportunities, with local government entities playing a vital role as energy distributors.
Some key distinctions between the South African and Australian energy landscapes include:
* Embedded generation projects of 100MW and below do not require licensing in South Africa
* The majority of embedded generation projects are in the commercial and industrial sector, and
* There is a pending bill to separate retailing and distribution responsibilities among municipal electricity distributors.
Furthermore, the Municipal Embedded Generation Support Programme (www.SSEG.org.za) provides ongoing technical support for the safe integration of embedded generation projects into municipal distribution networks. I also found a video showcasing how rooftop solar presents an opportunity for #localgovernment#distributors in South Africa to be enlightening: https://lnkd.in/gb6hBPSrIntegrate To Zero, Dan Hamza-Goodacre, IEEFA Asia Pacific, Anton Eberhard, Bruce Mountain, Chris Yelland, Ronald Marais, Christine Juta, Nhlanhleni Lucky Ngidi, #electricity#distribution#DER#integration
i think renewable energy will play a key role in the global energy transition, particularly in regions where grid infrastructure is less developed. for africa, integrating solar power into the charging infrastructure can address the energy deficit while promoting sustainability.

With only 30% of households near the grid receiving any connection—and fewer than that experiencing a steady supply—millions of Nigerians rely on costly generators to fill the 33-43 TWh supply gap. At Infibranches, we’re bridging this disparity with renewable, reliable solar energy, crafting a future where every home enjoys equal access to sustainable power.

At Africa Oil Week 2024, we highlighted the critical barriers in renewable energy development—particularly the gaps in grid coordination and regulatory processes. Achieving Africa’s renewable energy goals requires unified efforts from all stakeholders to build the infrastructure needed for a sustainable and prosperous energy future.
Together, we can build the infrastructure that supports both energy security and economic growth.

Key Reforms for Accelerating UK Clean Energy Deployment:
RenewableUK has outlined reforms to the Contracts for Difference (CfD) auction scheme to speed up renewable energy deployment.
🔹Proposed reforms include:
- Extending CfD contract lengths from 15 to 20 years to enhance long-term investment security.
- Increasing the frequency of CfD auctions to at least twice a year, starting from 2025, ensuring more consistent project development.
- Aligning the Capacity Market with Net Zero by 2035 goals, focusing on low-carbon technologies.
🔹 RenewableUK also supports measures to address inflation and project cost increases due to the global economic situation.
🔹 These reforms are seen as essential for hitting the UK’s 2030 renewable energy targets and boosting investor confidence in the sector.

BIRD Energy Launches Funding Cycle to Advance Collaborative Innovation in Renewable Energy and Efficiency
BIRD Energy, a joint initiative between the U.S. Department of Energy, the Israeli Ministry of Energy, and the Israel Innovation Authority, has announced its latest funding cycle aimed at supporting projects focused on Renewable Energy, Efficiency, and technologies to reduce carbon emissions. With a maximum funding allocation of up to $1.5 million per project, this initiative seeks to foster collaborative innovation between the United States and Israel. Projects eligible for consideration must involve joint R&D cooperation between two companies or between a company and a university/research institution, with one entity from the U.S. and one from Israel. Proposals should emphasize […]
