3,242 calendar days -- or almost nine years... That's the maximum timeline for the more taxing capacity upgrades facing the California Public Utilities Commission. A new substation to power #HDEV-charging depots, for example. Even a substation upgrade clocks in at more than two and a half years. Now, senior trucking professionals are sounding the alarm on this critical conflict between the Golden State's pioneering targets for freight electrification and the reality of building out the required infrastructure. “We’ve millions of dollars in the facilities and more in motion. If we can’t get the power, this all comes to a screeching halt.” ~ Paul Rosa, SVP of Procurement and Fleet Planning at Penske Truck Leasing / Powering America’s Commercial Transportation (PACT) board member. In addition to legislative efforts to remove administrative burdens and speed up utility upgrades, North America needs to look to alternative fast charging solutions, from dynamic power distribution that can smooth load demands to battery-integrated systems that cut installation time and support the grid, rather than stretching it. If your fleet plans are facing barriers in the form of limited grid capacity and extended upgrade timelines, our team can help. If there is a cheaper way to fuel trucks, that's great. If it's environmentally friendly, even better. There isn't any fundamental opposition in the trucking industry to electrification or hydrogen fueling so long as these forms of energy can provide the same performance as diesel. The problem is a) they don't, b) it's unclear who's going to pay for the new infrastructure. And there's a third point that goes beyond the money. There is a shortage of trucking-related real estate, period. It's going to be challenging to find space, as in any space, to build additional fueling infrastructure. If you're in Chicago and either have access to a semi truck or someone that's willing to drive you, take a trip to the Pilot or the Thorntons on 83. You might wait over 30 minutes to fuel and if you're looking for a place to park for a while... good luck! Not to mention a lot of small trucking companies don't have their own yard. Only the big companies have large terminals that could be conceivably retrofitted for these new technologies. Get your popcorn because the road to EV and hydrogen cell fleets is going to be entertaining. From the The Wall Street Journal. #logistics #ev https://lnkd.in/ge7mVYq3

California has some of the nation’s boldest #cleantransportation policies that aim to get more #electricvehicles on the road, like the Advanced Clean Trucks (ACT) rule from the California Air Resources Board. The ACT (which went into effect this year) requires manufacturers of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles to sell an increasing percentage of zero-emissions vehicles each year from 2024 to 2035. Several other states including #Maryland, #Massachusetts, #NewJersey, #NewYork, #Oregon, and #Washington have also adopted the rule. But did you know that issues with a little-known #gridtransparency tool could hinder the success of this policy? That’s because many more #EVchargers will be needed to power these vehicles. A critical barrier to installing these chargers on the grid is finding locations that don’t require expensive and time-consuming grid upgrades. Since 2019, the California Public Utilities Commission has required the state’s utilities to publish public #griddata that can help identify these sites, but ongoing inaccuracies are making that impossible. With other states looking to California’s strategy for clean trucks rollout, the impacts could be wider reaching if #California regulators fail to ensure accurate #grid data that enables developers to install the needed EV charging infrastructure. If your system’s batteries are able to live longer, it will reduce the total cost of ownership. These are 3 reasons it happens: 1️⃣ Longer-lasting batteries reduce the need for frequent replacements and maintenance. 2️⃣ Reduced downtime allows maintenance teams to focus on strategic tasks, improving efficiency. 3️⃣ Extended battery life minimizes operational disruptions, maximizing resource allocation. Make sure that you invest in long-lasting batteries for lower operational costs, increased efficiency, and a reduced total cost of ownership for railways. How are you optimizing battery technology to reduce operational costs in your railway tracking systems? #Downtime #Maintenance #Battery #Power #Strategy

The "hubs" that are referenced from the Biden Administration seem oddly familiar to what Lane VC portfolio companies Einride and Xos Trucks have shared from their market strategy and growth plans. Will the existing and new administration assist in building the infrastructure to support such? The adoption should not be on the carriers or manufacturers. They are willing however the infrastructure is not ready...yet. Lane VC hopes to assist in allocating funds and resources to the infrastructure and U.S. supply chain needs. Driving Innovation. Faster. Together.
The Biden Administration has released the first-ever strategy document detailing its plan to target specific freight corridors for infrastructure improvement, with the intent of helping to reach its goal of 100% zero-emission new truck sales by 2040. National Infrastructure Week is a reminder that charging for electric vehicles, including medium- and heavy-duty trucks and transportation, is critical for California to meet its clean air and 2045 climate goals. Our Countdown to 2045 analysis shows that 90% of vehicles will need to run on clean electricity in the next two decades for the state to improve air quality and reach net zero. Southern California Edison (SCE)’s Charge Ready Transport program is accelerating the adoption of medium- and heavy-duty EVs by assuring available charging infrastructure. Last month, we energized WattEV, Inc.’s new depot with 12 dual-port chargers to support truck routes connecting the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles with inland destinations. Earlier this year, my teammate, Chanel Parson, participated in the grand opening of Zeem Solutions’ new medium- and heavy-duty charging site in Inglewood. SCE partnered with NFI and Electrify America to energize a charging depot in Ontario that opened in April and will allow battery-electric trucks to refill at 38 separate DC fast chargers. And just this week, Forum Mobility celebrated the groundbreaking of a drayage EV charging site at the Port of Long Beach. SCE is proud to provide the reliable electric infrastructure that makes California the leader in electrifying transportation. #infrastructureweek #cleanenergy #energy #innovation #electricvehicles #transportation #trucking https://lnkd.in/gyHWNmdn
