As huge media rights deals, like the NBA's move to Amazon Prime Video, make headlines, sports leagues are quietly investing in their streaming platforms. Take the NFL, which just revamped its app, putting its ad-free red zone service at the heart of the NFL+ premium offering. The reason? Fans are juggling complex and costly subscriptions to catch every match. With NBA games split across four media providers, it's no wonder sports organizations are creating their solutions to streamline access and boost fan engagement. I had a chance to recruit to RedBee from time to time and it's a really cool place to work in as well as with amazing people there! The evolution of sports content in the digital age is reshaping how we watch our favorite games! By 2025, it's projected that 118 million viewers in the US will be streaming sports content 🏆📱 With streaming rights scattered across multiple platforms, following your favorite teams can get complicated. You might need Amazon Prime for Thursday Night Football, Netflix for NFL’s Christmas Day games, and YouTube for out-of-market NFL Sunday Ticket. ⚽🏀🏈 This shift isn't just affecting where we watch sports but also how we engage with them. Paramount+ saw significant growth in viewers after streaming Super Bowl LVIII, contributing to it being the most watched program ever with over 200 million viewers. What does this mean for the average sports fan? More subscriptions, yes, but also more choices and better access to specific sports content. 🏅 Are you willing to subscribe to multiple platforms to catch all your favorite games? #Streaming #SportsMedia #DigitalAge

Live sports streaming has come a long way. Every major streaming platform now has skin in the game, including: 🎄 NFL Christmas Day games on Netflix ⚾ MLB Sunday Leadoff on Roku ⚽ Major League Soccer on Apple TV+ 🏈 Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime 🎟️ NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube TV SVODs, FASTs, and vMPVDs are all driving this migration by displacing legacy media’s claim over live sports media rights. And across all three, ads are key to profitability. I don’t care if you’re a viewer, advertiser, or streamer: The dreaded blank screen telling viewers that “We’ll be right back” during a commercial break is never welcomed. But in the dynamic and near-real-time context of sports streaming, it can occur when ad pods go unsold. There are three reasons this occurs: 1. The fragmentation across CTV media buying can hinder efficient ad placement 2. Even though viewers have made their preference for streaming clear, advertisers have been slow to adapt 3. Live sports streaming technology is still in its early years and kinks are being worked out I recently talked to Variety about what’s in store as advertisers and streamers adapt. While some hurdles are being resolved, industry-wide adoption will drive these improvements. Last week, Netflix announced it secured the global streaming rights to Christmas Day NFL games. Consumers must now subscribe to SEVEN different streaming services to watch the full 2024 season – with a total cost of $1610 a year. Our Going for Gold report had similar findings, with most sports fans paying 50% more than the average subscriber. Everyone’s looking to capitalize on the massively profitable SportsVOD sector, but subscribers are frustrated. Over half see piracy as the only way to view all of their sports in one place, reflecting a fragmented industry. Sports fans will always want to watch their favorite teams play – but when that becomes too expensive, inconvenient, or difficult through official channels, they’ll find other ways to tune in. Without a simpler and more accessible platform for sports fans to control their subscriptions, content providers risk turning potential consumers away. Thanks to The Guardian for their analysis. 🚀 Venu Sports: Game-Changer or More Complexity? 💭 The launch of Venu Sports, the new 'Hulu for Sports' by ESPN, Fox, and Warner Bros., raises mixed feelings. Venu Sports promises to simplify the fragmented sports streaming world, offering a central hub for channels like ESPN, ABC, Fox Sports, TNT, and TBS. This could streamline the viewing experience and potentially reduce costs for consumers. 🏀⚽️🎾 Yet, critical gaps remain: missing content from Paramount and NBC, including the Olympics and some NFL games, and uncertain regulatory approvals. 🚧💡 How will this shape the Latin American media landscape and the preferences of Spanish-speaking audiences? 🌎📺 Bundling, unbundling, rebundling, and so on... Share your thoughts! 💭👇 #Sports #Marketing #DigitalStrategy #Streaming #LatinAmerica

✅🖥️ StreamTV Insider (8/19): “In temporarily blocking the launch, the order stated that Fubo succeeded in showing “it will suffer imminent and irreparable injury if this Court does not enjoin the JV from launching until a full trial on the merits can be held.” The Venu Sports joint venture, announced earlier this year, brings together the collective sports assets of Disney’s ESPN, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery. It intended to launch this fall, priced at $42.99 per month with a bundle of 14 linear networks as well as the ESPN+ streaming service and ability to bundle with Disney+, Max and/or Hulu. Networks include ESPN, FS1, FS2, TNT Sports, and TruTV, among others, and the entities hold rights to games for professional leagues including NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and a wide range of college and other sports. Venu Sports claims to be primarily targeting cord cutters and cord nevers, with a lineup of premium sports-only content in one subscription service. Still, some industry observers previously pegged the JV as a threat to both Fubo and traditional pay TV providers that are facing broader linear TV industry declines, while recent data from Circana found non-pay TV subscribers are least likely to say they’d subscribe to Venu. Fubo for its part has been in the streaming game offering a cable-like lineup of pay TV channels with an emphasis on sports-first since its debut in 2015.” ⬇️ #streamingtv #ctv #ott #avod #svod #cordcutting https://lnkd.in/e7G89GAY

NFL is making big moves to expand their outreach to streaming platforms. Not only are they playing on the usual broadcast networks FOX, NBC, CBS, & ESPN, but adding streaming platforms to their repertoire is a game changer. ESPN+, Prime, and now Netflix streaming Christmas games. I hope the apps can handle all of that traffic when this time comes. The NFL is trying to take over Christmas. Will the NBA please step up to the plate and expand their outreach like the NFL has? Y'all got ESPN/ABC and TNT, but they should've explored expanding to streaming a while ago, or even have international season games. Streaming is pushing aggressively to add live sports.
