📚 Professional Learning Highlight: Evidence-Based Literacy Instruction with Jocelyn Seamer I'm excited to share insights from last Friday's transformative professional learning session with Independent Schools Tasmania, focusing on "Building the Foundations for your Literacy Block in Years 3-6." Educational consultant Jocelyn Seamer delivered a comprehensive program that bridged research and practice, equipping our educators with evidence-based strategies for enhancing literacy instruction in upper primary classrooms. The session covered essential content including: • Evidence-based instructional methods critical for reading and writing development • Effective structuring of upper primary literacy blocks • How Words Work: exploring morphology and etymology • Systematic approaches to spelling instruction • Building Strong Sentences through daily syntax instruction • Strategic teaching and assessment of comprehension using rich texts What stood out was the immediate applicability of these strategies. Our educators left with concrete tools they can implement in their classrooms today. It's inspiring to see our Independent Schools Tasmania community's dedication to advancing literacy instruction through evidence-based practices. This kind of professional development directly impacts student outcomes and reinforces our commitment to educational excellence. Thank you to Jocelyn Seamer for sharing her expertise and to all the educators who participated in this valuable learning opportunity. #EducationalLeadership #LiteracyInstruction #ProfessionalDevelopment #EvidenceBasedEducation #TeacherExcellence #IndependentSchoolsTasmania #ContinuousLearning What professional learning initiatives are making a difference in implementing a structured literacy approach in your educational community?

There is an urgent need to rethink literacy instruction based on the available research. Here’s what principals and administrators need to know: 1. Commit to Professional Development: Invest in ongoing training on the latest research and practices in reading instruction. 2. Adopt Evidence-Based Practices: Embrace instructional strategies backed by rigorous research, like systematic phonics instruction. 3. Address Inequities: Ensure all students, regardless of background, have access to high-quality reading instruction. 4. Utilize Data-Driven Decision Making: Regularly assess student progress to inform instruction and provide targeted interventions. 5. Foster a Culture of Literacy: Create an environment where reading is valued and celebrated, involving families in the process. The science of reading has the potential to revolutionize literacy instruction and ensure that 90% of children can learn to read with the right methods. Let’s transform lives one reader at a time.
