Next to the European activities of my unit at the Bundesanstalt für Landwirtschaft und Ernährung it is important for me to listen to the national actors and researchers in the context of food systems. Thanks to Deutsche Agrarforschungsallianz #Dafa several speakers indicated these days in Berlin problems and research gaps, which was followed by an interesting discussion with the audience. We will take the message with us and stay in contact with #Dafa to exchange also in the future.

Today, on International Day for Biological Diversity, we want to emphasize the importance of preserving and reinventing our food systems in the Mediterranean. Biological diversity resources form the foundation of our civilizations. Fish supply 20% of the animal protein consumed by approximately 3 billion people, while plants contribute over 80% of the human diet. The publication 'Youth Commitment to Sustainable Food Systems' gives voice to young researchers and entrepreneurs with ideas and projects for a different kind of rural and agricultural development.
