Ad platforms do not have your best interests at heart. I hope this is not some controversial or revelatory statement. It is a basic fact. And one that advertisers can sometimes lose track of, to their detriment. What do I mean by this? Well, ad platforms' primary goal is to make money - particularly the large, publicly traded platforms. Their top priority is keeping their stock prices high and meeting analysts’ expectations for growth. It’s not that they don’t want advertisers to succeed and be satisfied with their platform’s ad performance. It is just that that is not their top priority. I’m not casting aspersions on ad platforms. I am instead reminding advertisers, and those who manage ads on their behalf, to be mindful of this tension between what is best for advertisers and what is best for the ad platforms. It can be easy to forget that this basic tension is always present. The most successful digital advertising initiatives fully realize this dynamic and find ways to make the systems work to their advantage.
