Have you heard about the Spotify model? There was information published about a model that Spotify used for their engineering teams that talked about mixing in horizontals effectively. It was incredibly effective and many different engineering organizations decided they'd go chase a similar pattern. Except... The information published *wasn't* that it was being used successfully! It was aspirational! While we think there are some very interesting takeaways from the model, it's a good reminder to not blindly copy+paste! ---- 👀 Check out the full video on our channel! 🗣️ Share with your network! #softwareengineering #engineeringmanager #engineeringmanagement

Leemay Nassery and Emily Samuels from Spotify dropped these great insights before lunch: “If no one’s the Lead Engineer, guess what? You’re probably the Lead Engineer!” and, “Hindsight is 20/20. You will never have all the information you want to make the best decision, we can make the best decision with the information we have at hand. And the best way to get better at making decisions is to keep making them, practice, learn from your mistakes and your experiences.” #LeadDevNewYork

Whether your Organization needs to scale up or down, the question that no one ever asks first is, "How will this impact our day-to-day operations?" It's always an after thought and it took Spotify 4 months to realign after downsizing. But at what cost? When you can visualize your Operations process, you can proactively address the 'who, what, when, and how within your operations team so that you can scale (up or down) with minimal impact to your company. #leansixsigma #continuousimprovement #workflowdocumentation #scalingstrategically https://lnkd.in/e3pBN6Hw

🎸 Spotify Wrapped finally dropped. It's fun, it's personal, and it's a System Design wonder. This year, Spotify delivered Wrapped to an estimated 700 million users worldwide. Here's what Spotify engineers have set up behind the scenes: → Data pipelines to efficiently process petabytes of user-listening data → Real-time scaling to handle traffic spikes as everyone checks their stats → Machine learning models generating the insights we're all sharing on Instagram Want to know how they pull it off? Check out this case study, where I explore how Spotify engineers make Wrapped work — and the System Design lessons every developer should know. 🔗 Here's a link: https://educat.tv/3OGhAIk 💬 While you're here – what song made your playlist's #1 spot this year? Spotify just brought me a little Friday afternoon fun which I thought I'd share... October 2024 was, apparently, my "Pink Pilates Princess Strut Pop" moment. Now, I'll totally own Chappell Roan's top spot appearance in my list, and my colleagues at The 36 Group might agree with Spotify's take on my "strut" style (the new standing desks in Chambers really do elevate a good desk dance!) But Taylor Swift and Katy Perry in October? Not so much. While I did give them a try for the sake of a super-fan colleague of mine (a self-proclaimed 'Swiftie'), Spotify's bold claim that I was "big" on them both feels... off. Given my wide-ranging musical tastes, I'd also be willing to bet there was less pop over all that month than Spotify's algorithm suggests. This is a great reminder that algorithms are often interpretive. The appearance of a given data point, like my fleeting Taylor trial, is not necessarily conclusive evidence of anything. And this highlights a broader challenge: the way algorithms shape our experiences. Poor data use and filter bubbles can box us in, reinforcing biases and limiting discovery. Patterns identified by algorithms and AI systems may only be temporary, or might result from third parties rather than accountholders, such as those who share someone's Netflix or Spotify account, and care with these data needs taking by developers and deployers of such technologies accordingly. Still, Spotify's claim made me laugh. Happy Friday! #AI #TechLaw #ArtificialIntelligence 36 Stone
