Have you heard about the Spotify model? There was information published about a model that Spotify used for their engineering teams that talked about mixing in horizontals effectively. It was incredibly effective and many different engineering organizations decided they'd go chase a similar pattern. Except... The information published *wasn't* that it was being used successfully! It was aspirational! While we think there are some very interesting takeaways from the model, it's a good reminder to not blindly copy+paste! ---- 👀 Check out the full video on our channel! 🗣️ Share with your network! #softwareengineering #engineeringmanager #engineeringmanagement

Leemay Nassery and Emily Samuels from Spotify dropped these great insights before lunch: “If no one’s the Lead Engineer, guess what? You’re probably the Lead Engineer!” and, “Hindsight is 20/20. You will never have all the information you want to make the best decision, we can make the best decision with the information we have at hand. And the best way to get better at making decisions is to keep making them, practice, learn from your mistakes and your experiences.” #LeadDevNewYork

If there's one thing I've learned, it's that process isn't one-size-fits-all. The outcomes you need from a process? Those can be universal. But just because a process worked somewhere else doesn't mean it'll work for you. Remember the Spotify model everyone tried to adopt, only to find it slowed them down? The problem wasn't the goal – speeding up and aligning development teams – but the assumption that they were Spotify. Your culture, team, and systems are unique. You don't need to transform into Spotify to achieve your goals. Start with your intended outcomes – like utilisation or recovery – and build backwards from there. Don't force your process to fit a mold. Make the process fit you.

It's about a year since Marty Cagan and I collaborated on an article (https://lnkd.in/gGYHkMAC) that illustrates how the principles behind how Spotify and the world’s top product companies work are remarkably consistent. Next week I'm running a live online course that goes deep into exactly that topic. It's called "Product Model Explained: Learnings from Spotify and the Best Product Companies" and aims to explain what those principles and practices are and how you can apply them in your organization to create a similar environment. Yes! 🎉 The course Joakim talks about in this post provides a complete overview of the key elements and essential parts of what differentiates truly outcome based, value focused and product-led organizations from "the rest". Each element and topic was given ample time with lots of examples, making it clear what actually is different in these companies compared to "the rest". This includes topics such as leadership, decision making, dealing with uncertainty, creating space for innovation and providing boundaries that enable action. Filled with real stories and examples from real life. Joakim Sundén's experience is a treasure trove!

Whether your Organization needs to scale up or down, the question that no one ever asks first is, "How will this impact our day-to-day operations?" It's always an after thought and it took Spotify 4 months to realign after downsizing. But at what cost? When you can visualize your Operations process, you can proactively address the 'who, what, when, and how within your operations team so that you can scale (up or down) with minimal impact to your company. #leansixsigma #continuousimprovement #workflowdocumentation #scalingstrategically https://lnkd.in/e3pBN6Hw
