Will the correct use of AI transform the potential of India? Spent an amazing two days last week at the Global India AI Summit organised by Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. Attended various panel discussions and met with leaders across big tech, government and civil society and here are a few key takeaways : 1. Real World Applications : The need to focus on using AI to solve for real world problems revolving around healthcare, public infrastructure, service delivery and governance instead of just focussing on industries like content and/or other quick enterprise use case solutions. 2. Data Set Availability : Consolidation and availability of local language data sets across multiple case scenarios to help train models. (Also need for contextual data) 3. Job Loss vs Job Growth : The need to view AI in the light of helping us advance our careers and grow industry rather than replace manual workforce. Also the need for education platforms to provide certified skilling courses to get young India ready. 4. Ethics : IndiaAI mission and its commitment to developing fair practice, ethical guidelines around the use of responsible AI and more. 5. As the world stands on the precipice of an AI revolution, a critical obstacle has emerged – the fragmentation and scarcity of training datasets for AI models. As these systems require massive amounts of data to learn and evolve, the current data shortage poses a critical bottleneck and is significantly impacting further development of generative AI technologies. The situation has escalated to legal battles between publishing houses and AI training companies. Publishers allege that their historical in-house production and community-contributed data, such as text content and videos, have been used for training AI models without explicit consent. Interestingly, while unavailability of training data is slowing down the progress of generative AI, it (inadvertently) gives humanity more time to learn to co-exist with this transformative technology. It also offers an opportunity to deliberate on the ethical implications and prepare for the transformative changes that AI promises to bring. To overcome this challenge, AI training companies are exploring synthetic training datasets, i.e. data generated by AI models themselves, as a potential solution. However, there is no assurance that synthetic data would work as effectively as naturally occurring data. While the problem of biases and model errors getting reinforced has been acknowledged, a more significant concern is that the same (cross-domain) patterns that have already been discovered by AI will continue to repeat and get reinforced in these synthetic datasets. This won't lead to any new (and verified) patterns getting discovered, thus hindering the further advancement of models. At this critical juncture, our society and government must invest in upskilling our current workforce and preparing our youth for a future where large-scale AI-driven automations become commonplace across industries. By re-imagining our education policies and fostering a culture of AI literacy and critical thinking, we can ensure that India is well-prepared for a world where advanced AI systems are ubiquitous and capable of performing human-like tasks with ease. #training #selfdevelopment #techsavvy In May 2024, I participated in several trainings to enhance my core and supporting skills regarding environmental education, one of them was about AI as supporting tools in academic and office jobs. In the progressive era, we should keep updating our knowledge and skills in order to improve the quality and/or quantity of the outputs. Somehow, fear of missing out (FOMO) is something which could not be prevented in these occasions. From this training, I realize that human will keep adapting and inventing technology to make their lives easier. To some extend, AI will overlap the human jobs due to its precicion and accuracy in redundant work. However, human touch absolutely gives different vibes, especially in terms of seeing the beauty of imperfection in this era of AI. Innovation and creativity is the unique sides of human which could not be replaced by AI. At least for now. Being wise in using the technology is the main moral message.
